this is the whole patch
blooming ginger
Hi Irish! Where ya been? Maybe I have just been missing you.
That is completely and totally impressive! I have only seen little gingers in pots. LOL
Gosh, I've never seen gingers until this year. My Butterfly ginger is only about a foot and a half tall. Pete, will mine bloom this year? Great pictures.
Bad seed I have been here just not poasting that much
Brugie... not sure I have a small one that is also blooming I am thinking that its because of all the rain we have been having the pine cone has taken almost two years since I both it a K-mart but I moved it after the frist summer for I thought it was in a bad spot
Thanks Pete. I guess I'll just try to be patient and see what happens later this summer.
It's possible, Brugie. But mine don't bloom til fall usually, although I have noticed one pod has developed already.
I have butterfly and spiral ginger blooming now. Don't know much about them though. Where ya been gingerlily?
Doesn't it seem like lots of things are blooming a little earlier this year?
Been here and there, weeds. Been on BGI more than at first, but not that much. My MIL has been teaching me to make old fashioned bonnets, so I've been kinda hooked on that the last couple of weeks.
Gingerlily you have enough talents already. Now a bonnet maker. I've missed you also.
Irish I have been wondering about you also. My ginger doesn't bloom until late summer and then on into fall. It sure smells good.
Badseed do you want some ginger. I have plenty of the butterfly and it spreads like crazy. Plant one and next year a 1/2 dozen.
I have the red that is up about two feet but it isn't ready to bloom yet.
Are there any hardy gingers for zone 5? That sure would solve a big problem for me. The foliage is nice, but I'd like to see bloom too.
My ginger is blooming now too, though it usually blooms a little later, this is the butterfly ginger. Brugie, it seems that yours should get a bloom now, though mine is about four or five feet tall. It came back from last year tho, and it seems stuff that comes back gets bigger the second year. Maybe like roses, the first year sleep, the second year creep, and the third year, leap?
Thanks Roz, but don't I have to dig this ginger for winter? We get pretty cold up here, like maybe down to ten below zero or more. Maybe if it has to be dug, I should grow it in a pot next year.
Roz, I think mine is the tallest its ever been, and I've had it for years. I helieve it's 6-7 feet tall. Soil moisture makes a lot of difference I think. Spreads faster in a damp area.
GRC, I want to come see ya'll at the GA swap so bad, but I probably won't get to make it. Looks like Oct may be a busy month.

Brugie, yes I am sure you would have to dig yours up for the winter. maybe a pot would be a good idea.
Ginger, wow, that tall? Unusual year we are having, huh?
Thanks Roz. Next spring I'll do things differently.
Jim, would you start me some of the different varieties of ginger that you have and bring them to KY roundup? I will let you know soon what I will have to bring. I am behind with my repotting, flower garden weeding, etc. but hope to catch up soon. LOL! The rains kind of enabled the weeds and trimming to get way ahead of me this year. My big flower garden (it once was a vegetable garden) is so over grown we are going to need a jungle guide and machete to get that one back in shape. Maybe a shotgun also just in case there are any bad creatures lurking. LOL
