Pod Question

Matthews, MO(Zone 6b)

When watering tonight I noticed Butterfly has a seed pod on it. Now this was the first one to bloom for me here at the house, and at the time this would have been pollinated there was NOTHING else blooming. It is quite large, and was hidden at the bottom of the plant. Self pollination???

I don't think Butterfly is self pollinating....never heard of that before on Butterfly. Does anyone else in your neighborhood have any Brugs?

Tracey, I too have three small Butterfly plants that were the ONLY brugs blooming in the whole greenhouse at the time. They each have one pod. The little plants were about a foot tall at the time and each plant had one bloom. I didn't know they had set pods till I moved them later. I remember when they bloomed, it was early in the season and I noticed because they were so short and the blooms were as big as the plant!

Interesting!!!! If mine ever blooms I'll try the self pollinating thing.

Glory, that's what I just thought about doing. I will put a stocking over the bloom to be sure the bees and moths stay out!

Charles Grimaldi plants in San Diego (Balboa Park) routinely form lots of pods..when no apparrent plants are blooming nearby..but the seeds are sterile. Some plants can set seed pod even when the seeds are steriles

Oh, I was getting so hopeful that Butterfly would grow true from seed. Hey Cala, do I feel an experiment coming on?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I'm always up for an experiment!

I am game too!!! It was just weird, wouldn't it be neat if just one came up! Gloria, I am the only one out here for miles, with any kind of flowers. The next person out here is a mile away.

My pods are ripe. I picked them. The pods were small, one had ten seeds in it, the other had 32 seeds. The one with 10 seeds were all good seeds, i.e. they had a "bean" inside the seed. The one with 32 had a few empty seeds, but most were good. Now to see what comes up!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

so these are the butterfly that had to be self pollinated? WOW! Do not forget to move them with you! LOL

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Hope the seeds don't end up being sterile? Please let us know what becomes of them. If they turn out to be good, that is a BIG breakthrough!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

If they are sterile, they should have been empty. These have a bean in them. I'm going to see what comes up, but will wait till after the move. I have enough seedlings to move as it is!

Mine is still growing good. So I am keeping my fingers crossed.
