Can camellias be traded?

Monroe, LA(Zone 8a)

I keeping telling everyone I don't have anything to trade yet (I'm a very new gardener) but I do have 3 gigantic camellias in my yard that came with the house. One is white, one's a medium pink and the other is almost red. The house is a hundred years old and these plants may be close to that in age so I have no idea about the names. Is it possible to trade cuttings off of them (I have no idea how to do this)? Even if no one's interested in trading for them I certainly don't mind sharing :-)

Hi Mary Ann,
Welcome to Dave`s Garden.
I have some camellias too. Mine make seed and they can be planted. A cutting takes a very long time to take root. It doesn`t always happen. They only root if they are put in a damp shady place and not disturbed by wind or touching. My aunt used to place a fruit jar over them under the side of her house and ignored them until the jar filled up with leaves.

If you are taking cuttings I would be interested in knowing how they do.

That is so interesting.....if you get some to root, I would difinitely love to trade for some.

eyes, It is so much easier to start them from seed than cuttings. It takes a while for the seed to sprout but they don`t like to be disturbed and form a long tap root. I have some seed if you would like to hsve some.

Would love some, busybee!! Thanks for telling me that, I guess I never thought of them as having tap roots like 4 o'clocks or Malvas.

Thanks for the information! How do I harvest the seeds? Mary Ann

Zuluqueen504, After flowering they will make dark green hard seed balls. When they are ready they split open and 3 seed are inside. They have a shell that is hard as wood therefore taking a long time to sprout. Nicking and soaking should help this.

Lori, I have already sent your other seed but I can send you some of these also.

It's too late for me to try them from seed. I'll try it after the next bloom. In the meantime "eyes" I'm going to try to root some cuttings. I found several web sites that said it takes patience but can be done. If it works I'll let you know! Mary Ann

Mary Ann, Mine are still growing. They aren`t ready to pick yet. Check your bushes and see if you can find any green balls of any size. They will be ready to pick when they start to turn brown and begin to split open. The seed are very large, brown and easy to find if they fall to the ground.

gosh i was looking for just this info! i have a couple of seeds on a small bush. i picked one yesterday and it was green green green inside.
you might think air layering also, it will take some time also but you could end up with a larger start.

I am very anxious to check my plants for seed balls but this rain is unreal. I guess I'll have to wait until Tropical Storm Bill does his thing! Mary Ann
