Hi Floridian!

Nice orchid!! I've got the yellow species: http://plantsdatabase.com/go/56643/ and I've read that with members of the genus Phaius you can produce new bulbs by cutting the flower stalk at the base (after the flowers are finished, of course!! :) and laying it down in damp sand - in a month or new plants will pop up along the stalk.

I'm going to try it - if you do too, I'll trade you bulbs! (Knock on wood)

That would be great although the flowers are long past. Do they rebloom? Hehehe I'll be out rummaging around in the ferns later today to check on them. The yellow is beautiful!

Lucky you! - being able to grow them outside!!!

Is P. tankervilliae deciduous too?

Lutz, FL(Zone 9b)

This one is in a pot, outside and protected (surrounded by ferns) and stayed green all year, one small one in the ground, also protected, stayed green but in northern Florida (z8b) Weeds says her outdoor plants go dormant for the winter. When/If it blooms again we're going to try rooting the bloom stalk. Thanks for the info!

Flor -
Thanks for the info - it conforms to what I've heard from growers here: in SE Asia, P. tankervilliae is non-deciduous, but up north in the Ryukyus (Okinawa to Kyushu - about the same as N. Florida) people can grow it outdoors, but it requires a dry, deciduous rest.

Good luck on the stalk propagation whenever you can do it - I'll let you know how mine is doing in this thread.

I am going to try that too. Mine send up new plants each year and I and I dig up the new one and put it somewhere else.

We are very fortunate to be in FL. where we are able to grow these beautiful terrestrial orchids outside in fine weather!
