Potato vine, it doesn't seem to be a super vigorous grower but it has been blooming quite a while now.
solanum crispum, "Glasnevin"
Lenjo,
Mine blooms almost all year long..It is in the ground this year and has grown up a 12 ft pole since spring.. But even the one I still have in a large pot, just keeps on blooming year round.
Larkie
Joann I wonder how long it will take for my babies to grow to that size (many thanks, again). I just love it. Larkie has yours formed a good sized trunk?? Like maybe two inches?? The reason I ask is that the last time I saw this was in my sister's garden (in England) and it was quite tree-like but from Joann's picture and your description it really doesn't sound as though it would attain this girth but rather more in height.
Louisa,
I started my plant from a small cutting about 3 years ago..This is the 1st year in the ground..The one stem has now become five or six from the roots, and they are not even an inch around.. It keeps shooting new roots up from the main clump, and keeps growing and blooming it's heart out..I have rooted me another one to take inside for the winter..I'm going to try and see if this one will make it back from the roots next year..It should, last winter I never even took my large potted one inside..
Larkie
I've wanted this one for a long time. It wouldn't be hardy here tho. Does it make berries?
I actually have two more babies of this that need a home. I would love to trade for some seed of the black eyed susan vine or some other exotic passiflora start like that red one thaumaturgist posted. I do love vines. Joann
Lenjo - I have some different passiflora seedlings. I'll check out what I have left tomorrow and let you know.
sounds interesting, very interesting. The first year I had my potato vine I did as Larkie did, I kept it in a pot and finally this spring I planted it into the ground.
I do have the common passiflora caerula, I should n't really say common but hardy, the only one that would be hardy here. They are a great vine. I have a few blooms as we write(speak).
Good morning friends. Joann should I then keep the potted babies in the garage for the winter for the first year?? And by the way I have a lovely Akebia quinnata that I'm sure you would like. I need to go and see if it has set seed!! Or can do some cuttings in the fall. Larkie I do believe then that it will become tree-like!! How exciting!!
Joann I forgot to mention that Tim brought me many Passiflora from Florida but when he moved up here we decided he should take them back to baby them for his new garden since some were on the tender side. Sadly I believe his dog wrecked them but I still have a red one I believe and hope it comes through this year. If it does then I'm sure I can do a cutting for you.
Margaret, I have akebia quinata and it has sure taken off this summer. It is winding itself crazily around a post of an arbor. Yes, if you could get a red passiflora started I would be excited. Thanks, Joann
How could I refuse!! :-)
Hi Starzz - it looks very healthy and judging by the stems, I do believe it could grow to small tree proportions. Very sturdy!! Did you receive the plant from Joann this year??
Morning Louisa ..yes Joann sent it this year..but I think I would have to try to take a cutting and grow it over this winter..as I am in Zone 5a..and I don't think it will survive outside in below freezing temps.
You see I find that very strange because you must know how cold England can be with prolonged frosty weather and yet....it survived year after year. But you do well to take the precaution of keeping some cuttings protected just in case.
Have any of you noticed if your potato vine flowers were used by insects or hummingbirds?

Well Louisa I could always take the pot and plant inside and try to grow it over the winter under my lights in the basement..as well as taking some cuttings..but I am not too successful at growing things from cuttings.
No Flicker I really haven't seen the hummingbirds hanging around the potato vine.
Louisa and Starzz, I think I would bring your potato vine in the winter. I grew mine the first year in a pot and protected it some. Carol , I am happy to see yours is growing, that is so fun. Margaret, those guys I sent you were so root bound, I think they will be so grateful to have a new home.
Poppysue, you have a trade, just send me your address and I will send you the last two babies. Whatever you have I will be grateful to try. Joann
Thanks for the advice on overwintering. Boy Joann, it looks as though we are all going to have a little piece of you in our gardens and did I tell you....Charlie is doing marvellous....lol!! Did I tell you indeed!!! I am so pleased with this little guy and that's the first time I have called a rose a 'he'!!
Aw so sweet, I think of your wee baby grandson and me dad.
Thanks Joann..I looked this up and it is called Chilean Potato tree.http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/860.shtml
I am so enjoying this vine.
Cheers,
Carol
Good link Starzz and from across the pond too!! :-)
Thanks Louisa..now a favour..could you take a look at the ID forum and see if you can help me with my Rose ID..
I alos posted it in the roses forum..Joann thinks it looks like her Peppermint twist..but I looked it up and it is not the same colour. Mine is cream and light pink...with lots of petals..and quite flat across..no high centre.
