Wanted: Red Currants (Ribes)

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Does anyone have any to share? I can do trade for something or do postage. The ones I got from Lupinelover were black currants and as they are 1. Illegal to grow in Ohio and 2. Got mold spores all over them from the 5 needle pines that we have out front (that's why they're illegal), I had to pull them all out and pitch them because they were covered in white mold spurs :(

Desperately seeking the red ones which are fine to grow here :)

I wish I could help you out. I will ask some of the Master Gardeners here if they have some that they could spare.

Born and raised in the good ole South, and having never gardened anywhere else, I don't think I've ever even seen this plant. I do love the jelly made from the fruits, and use it to make my special sauce to serve with game. The taste has more character than plums. Believe it or not, not much of it is found in the stores, so I am led to conclude that it's a Northern thing. Like rhubarb, we don't see it often.

I'll keep searching :)
I did buy one from a nursery on the internet but would love to have a few more

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I checked around here today and the nurseries are out of them for this year. My friends don't have any to spare right now but they will let some seedlings grow to help you out in the future

Thanks Ponditis, that would be great :)

flowox, I have just one, that I got in trade last year from a nearby town. It has a few berries that may be viable, but I don't know what it takes to grow them from seed. (I hope to take a piece of it with me when I move but it may not be large enough to do that.)

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

hmmmmm I wonder if they would sprout from cuttings treated with a shrub root stimulator.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

not sure but it may be worth a try :)

Try hard and soft wood cuttings and do it in different months to see what month works the best for them. And you should probably use shrub root stimulator. Good Luck.

I'm still seeking red currant (ribes) and any raspberries and blackberries. I had bought one red currant plant from a nursery on the internet along with a gooseberry. They were both dormant, the gooseberry is doing great but the red currant never did do anything :(
Let me know if you may have one as I would be happy to pay postage or whatever

I believe Mellingers in North Lima carries the red currants. They are all out of bare root, but they will have it in the fall.

Just checked and they are called "Cherry Currants", they have them listed.

I just looked there. They sure are kinda high but if no one has any for me I'll have to give them a try once they get some again

Chardon, OH(Zone 5a)

I'm a little confused. Why do you think black currants are illegal to grow? Black currants may be rare in our state (I haven't checked for them on the endangered list), but I know they are native - they just grow in bogs.

Anyway, I'll check to see if any of my red currants have kids under them. I have several currant bushes - red and white and one or two spineless gooseberries. I know I have red raspberries that I have to keep pulling out as they spread. I'm sure I can give you some of those. I'll get back to you.

Dawn, I would love to have any of those that you'd like to share :)

If you go to different nursery sites on the web, they will tell you that they will not ship black currants to OH. You are not supposed to grow them here and I couldn't as what they said about the mold was true. I tried everything to get rid of it but the pines are right out front and it destroyed them all :(
