How do you all keep the wind from whipping your brugs to shreds? We generally have wind all the time, but a couple nights ago we got a huge windstorm during the night, and by morning the leaves on my two biggest brugs were shredded and they look very bad now. I have them in pots, so I brought them back inside to recover, but I know some of you plant them directly in the ground. How do you keep this from happening? Or do you live in areas that don't have wind?
Oh, and they will recover and grow more leaves won't they?
Wind and brugs
Yes, they will recover again. Here is always some wind, but only one or two real summer storms. We grow hedges of ligustrum and will make some of thuja too as these are better at keeping the winds out. Ours are between 1.8 to 2 m high, butwe need to get them up in 2.5 m as the Brugs here also have shredded and broken leaves after the last storm :) Hedges is one idea to keep the winds out, but I am sure there plenty more ways to do this :)

Once, when I knew a storm(hurricane) was coming, I put some fencing around a very large brug to keep the pieces from bending to far and breaking. You do have to pad the area where a trunk touches the fence ( it will scrape the bark off).
Joan, let it recover WITH the winds not away from them. It will make the leaves much stronger. Each time you take it inside to live a while, it has to re-adjust to the outside and winds are probably the hardest on them of any weather. It will be fine with time. Just let the winds howl around your brugs. They will be fine. Mine shredded a couple of times this spring and are looking okay now. We have lots of winds here too. Hang in there!!
OMG John...your garden would be my absoloute paradise *drewl*
Do you have any zone 10As where you are Bruno?
LOL....*sob* I wish! Some places in the southern coastal areas just make it into zone 9! I got some hardy nannas growing here...I just wish I was able to create more of a jungle atmosphere!
I hear that if climate change (global warming) happens, the UK and much of Europe will become MUCH colder. The reason it is so mild is because of the warm oceans. This will change to cold oceans. Sorry I can't explain it better.
I thought the opposite was supposed to happen....but allot wetter! Oh well...better enjoy sitting under me nannas while I can lol
Thank you all so much! I was stressing out about them, but now that I know they will recover, I'll put them back outside to fend for themselves in the wind. (Thanks Brugie!)
I'm also going shopping for sheltering plants to plant around the yard. Won't help this year, but will in future years.
