This really works? Found this today in a large pot at shallow end of this local pond. Anyone else growing one in water?
Swamp Hibiscus (Hibiscus coccineus )
I have grown them in the past and they did fine in the water. Haven't done it in a couple of years though.
Coney Island Amusement Park grows H. moscheutos in pots in the water as well! I was sure surprised to see it there. They were also growing white Datura next to it which also caught me off guard. Hmmm, should I tell them about Brugs?? he he he Heck, they may already be there.
Surely, not Brugs in water!
Anyone know how big of a pot they (Swamp Hib) would need?
Amazing that the roots don't suffocate.
How big of a pot does the hibiscus need? I have a swamp hibiscus seedling I'd like to stick in the pond. Would it stay smaller if it's in a small pot?
Um, I did not mean Brugs and Dats in the water, just by the water. The dat was stunning, even though plain white and made for a great reflection and scent.
I grew mine in a one gallon pot the first year. Put it into the ground for the winter and repotted it each spring from then on into a two gallon pot. The top of the pot was about an inch above the waterline. I fertilized it the same as I did my waterlilies. I thought I got great blooming with it but at the time I had never had one in the ground due to lack of garden area at that house.
I might try it.... since I really don't have any where else to plant the hibiscus. I don't think it will be hardy enough to winter over here.
poppysue, try it in the pond and then during the winter just put the pot into the soil and bury it under some inches of compost or soil or even leaves or straw. It should make the winter fine that way. Just remember that they don't pop out in the spring very fast and so you don't throw it away till after Mid June at least in your zone. I had one in the ground in Zone 4 and it made it fine under mulch. Just remove the mulch in the spring. Good luck.
I have one in my ponds, but it is in the ground..It does great and is blooming now.

Sue, We just got one recently in a 1 gallon pot. We put it right into the pond and it seems to be doing great. It's blooming and growing.
