Loquat tree

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Does anyone grow Loquats? I did a search & couldn't find any post on them. I have a small tree that was given me. I hope it lives & produces sometime..maybe not this year.

I haven't thought about loquats for years! We had one bush in our yard when I was growing up in Miami many years ago, and I loved them.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

we grow em here and I love them! The season is over with, they produce in very early spring. If there is a late cold front, the buds fall off and no fruit. I can't remember the last time that happened here. I do know the flowers are very sensitive to the cold weather and will fall off.

Hi Sugar_fl ..try searching Eriobotrya japonica if you can not find anything, will look in some books for you :)

I have one that I planted last year. It looks very healthy this year. I want to keep mine on the short and ornimenta looking. Does any one know about trimming it?

I have one that been in my backyard for over 25 years.
I've had to cut it back so many times. once established
it should give you plenty of sweet tasty and juicy louquats.

When this tree buds the smell is wonderful. I've just trimmed mine to almost it's all time low in these past years
and I have no doubt by next spring I'll have fruit.
Good Luck.

Thanks TR, when do you usually trim it, what's the best time ot year to trim? Can it be anytime? Vickie

I usually trim it after all the fruit has withered
This tree (I'll find pic) this year produced its
best crop ever. The leaves and branches of this tree try and grow upwards but when the fruit ripens it causes those branches to hang down because they are so heavy with fruit.
The tree almost died about 10 years ago from neglect but it did bounce back with a vengence.

As was mentioned by Lisa in Louisiana it fruits really early
as the summer here in Los Angeles progresses the fruit dries up and rots on the tree and becomes a magnet for birds and (gulp) rats. So right after harvest is best
imho.
Once again good luck
