Hummingbird humor!

Olympia, WA

I didn't have my camera, and the show was guaranteed to be short lived - but here is a description of a new behavior ....something I had not witnessed before.

I have a frog spitter that shoots water back into the pond .....and the other day, a female hummingbird was quite involved w/ the stream of water ....... for about 5 minutes, off and on. She appeared to be drinking from the spitting water source, then she looked as if she was trying to perch on it, then she took a shower, jetted away, and returned just as quickly to repeat this routine several times over!

It was absolutely riveting to watch this .... and while it could be happening all the time and I simply have been too busy to catch it, it was a wonderful show all the same.

Has anyone else seen this happen?

I had a pair that used to watch for me to water and the would act like that almost every day. I watered by hand and they followed me about playing in the spray.

These tiny birds are so amazing. My dad used to sit on their deck and eat ice cream. A hummingbird came right up to him and ate ice cream with him.

I heard hummingbirds enjoyed water spray - that's so cool. What a sight that must have been. I'd love to have seen that hummingbird come up to grandpa's ice cream cone; that story's the stuff of family legends!
