I got some ylang ylang seeds (Cananga Odorata) a couple of months ago. Being a cautious person (or a big chicken, depending on your point of view!), I sowed 4 of them, waited about a month and sowed 3 more. I have 3 seeds left, and so far, only one seed I've sown has sprouted. I know that they don't stay viable for very long, so my first thought is to sow the others while they're still good. However, if a bunch of the others start sprouting, I don't need all of them!
Ok, now for the weird thing. The only seed that has sprouted so far came from the second batch (I'm almost positive) and the seed leaves were wrapped around this white glob of gook that looked like marshmellow cream. I scraped it with my fingernail and it came right off. It was kind of thick and left a chalky residue on my fingers. WHAT WAS IT? There was a little hole in the seed leaves, so it seems like it could have been some kind of bug, but I didn't see anything.
Ylang ylang seed ?'s
Hi Ronna,
how's your seedling doing? Sounds like a bug was the culprit but I could be wrong. How have the other seeds you sown done? Good luck!
Either a squirrel or a bird (it's on a second floor balcony) came along and nipped off the seed leaves before a regular leaf could sprout. I was fit to be tied!! I was sure that it would die, but it sprouted a REAL leaf, and now has another one! Since I thought the first one was a goner, I sowed the other ones, but nothing has come up yet. I've read that they can sprout months after being sown, so I'm treating them like I believe in them. Hope it helps!
I had no luck with mine and they were as fresh as they come, this one would be lots of work for me but worth it!Good luck with them!
