I love plants, animals, and most things on God's good, green Earth. I think he made one mistake though.... spiders!
I am not "afraid" of them biting me. I simply LOATHE them and their utterly repulsive look and movements, which inspire such unbelieveably raise-the-hair-on-the-back-of-one's-neck feelings of revulsion and terror. (I can feel the shivers up-and-down my spine as I type this and even THINK about spiders).
In another thread, someone mentioned spiders and banana trees. ARE BANANA TREES SUPPOSED TO ATTRACT SPIDERS?
I love my banana trees -- they are so shady and tropical-looking here in the south. But if I thought they were harboring evil, sharp-toothed, beady-eyed spiders, I would cut them to the ground and take a flame-thrower to the roots!
Please say it isn't so! -- JEAN
Please Say It Isn't So!!!
Yes ,please say it ain't so cause spiders are the ONLY thing I'm skert of!
The wicked little beasts will jump for your eyes if given the chance!
I'm not scared of spiders but this year I have had a time with wasp. I just got stung for the 6th time in 3 months. I HATE WASP! Each time I get stung it gets worst. Scared I am going to be allergic to them at this rate.
'tis so Jean...so sorry...there is an Orb Weaver that just loves 'nana trees http://davesgarden.com/t/64161/ this is from my yard. Try to think of them as good guys, they control 'skeeters and well, you know..skeeters are more dangerous these days than spiders :-) (in a very small voice)just tryin to help :-)
Cool picture Lisa. I didn't know they help us out with skeeters! I have 3 new nana trees this year. I'll have to keep my eye on them to make sure they do their job!
Hopefully they are all WAY DOWN SOUTH!
Edited ,I must be tired ,misspelling everything

Hi LISA -- I DIDN'T click on the link because I have a sneaking suspicion that whatever Web page I go to will have a picture of a spider on it.
So banana trees DO attract spiders? (Let me get my flame-thrower ready....)
Perhaps I can find something that I can live with that EATS SPIDERS. There are a bazillion lizards around the yard. They're cute, and I think they eat spiders. I wish I could keep hens here.
On one of my little Bay Leaf trees, I saw a teensy little spider lowering himself by his thread.... just before I torched him with my Bic. DH thought it was cruel, but spiders don't deserve any mercy ("No Prisoners!!!")
And that "Good Guys" business is not going to work with me. When I was a kid, my mother tried that approach by reading "Charlotte's Web" to me. I wasn't buying it then either. LOL. There are no good spiders.
I know how you feel, but about snakes. I am having to learn not to scream when I see a rat snake because of the swamp behind us, I know they are keeping rats at bay for me.
but spiders really are your friend...
My husband mentioned that we had a spider in the bathroom. I checked it out a nice Daddy long legs with a corner web. He had lots of looked like mosquitos in the web. We left him.
Its also true about the chickens they eat anything that moves and most of what doesnt.

I don't think banana trees atract spiders more than any other plant, I have hundreds of spiders in my garden, sometimes they make their net in very strategic places, so that I can walk right into them lol... But I agree with tiG, they play a beneficial role by keeping other bugs at bay.
Well, DH had a new project today.
The faucet for the garden hose was behind the banana trees. It has now been moved twelve feet forward, in front of the trees, and one huge pup is going to be removed so that its leaves don't overhang my head when I need to use the hose.
And I thank you all for your "spiders-are-our-friends" declarations, but as to being beneficial, I would still choose a beneficial can of Raid over a spider-friend. :)
Sweet Pea, I think we all have atleast one thing we are really scared of, Or should I say a Fear of!! Mine is sharks!! I will not go in the ocean for nothing You can't make me!! I know they are in there and I ain't goin.
LOL
lol
loved the spider pic but Brian got shivers just looking at it. i like spiders but he is phobic. "my" part of the yard is more wild than the rest of the yard and if i tell him that there is one of those big garden spiders with all the yellow on them he won't even go there. a female had about 5 egg sacks down there and one day they were gone oh did i have a fit
I hate spiders! I have full of banana trees but no spiders but the cute green lizards are all over on bananas tree, cannas, ( tropicals plants). I have see this spider that Lisa posted.. At my mom's she have few of them every years. They are pretty spider.
Last two weekend, I went to my Mom's.. she warned me not to go to the barn ( 1st door). I said why? I need to go and find the twin bed frame over there. She said DONT GO THERE! She said there are full of black widows spiders! My brother told her which he went and opened and oh no! he couldnt enter it. It is all over.. So they are going to spray and kill them!
Minischnuz, Ha! Me? I'd have a barn-burning! LOL.
My banana trees are chock full of lizards too, which I like. Lizards EAT spiders, so all the lizards are welcomed here.
Troy, I'm with Brian on this one!
some cultures rost the big ones till the hair is all singed off and eat the meat. haha
Gag me!!!!!
I wish the best for them and hope they eat them in to extinction!
