Went to a plant swap today in Birmingham and saw my first brugmansia blooms..I am in so much trouble!! NOW I WANT ONE TO BLOOM THIS YEAR!!!!!!! Holy Cow they were GORGEOUS!!!!!!
I am in sooooooooo MUCH trouble
They really are gorgeous, glad you are one of us "brug nuts".
LOL.........another nut.....brug nut that is....hehehe
It is addicting! I have 4 now and this is my first year.
You have only just begun!! Just wait....this fall you can get so many cuttings and really have a forest next year.
ahhh but there is a dark side to this addiction--------it starts out innocently enough---a fosty pink perhaps--then dr. sues and before you know it----your "asking jeeves" about brugs----surfing sites-----missing work---spending your childrens college money-------will the madness ever end?
Cheryl.....NO, it never ends. Every year I weed them out now because I just can't keep every seedling that I grow, and I say to myself that I'm not going to have more than thirty the next year. I held it down to 75 or so this year and it was hard to do. I won't keep them all this fall, but I tell you....if you have room, you will soon fill it up with "just one more brug".
Brugie, I know exactly what you're talking about!!! I finally said "Stop" after I had 1500 seedlings up! I keep looking at that seed box though and thinking "What if there is a double pink in there". I'm afraid there is no hope for me!
Welcome to the wonderful world of brugs...
I am waiting for my move before I get back into them, am taking some cuttings and seeds.
Cala, yuou never know what will come from your seeds, you may very well have the double pink, it is definately a possibility with all the work you've been doing with them.
good luck to you!
Susie, 1500 would never make it here. I love brugs, but I also love my tomatoes, greenbeans, etc. Can't give the whole garden to brugs yet and I'm not sure I would be able to fight all the bugs on that many of them. Sure would be fun watching for all the new bloomers though.
Brugie, I haven't had any trouble with bugs except for the snails and occasional earwig since I've brought the brugs outside. I gave up greenbeans last year, this year, no tomatoes!
I understand the phobia for seedlings and what might show up. I planted 120 of my seedling daylilies yesterday. It is difficult to find enough room and also to keep them free of weeds. Donna
Gee, and I thought I was addicted. I only have 16 plants and I thought I was bad. I'm SOOO happy to hear that I've got a ways to go yet.
I've never had a seedpod, but I don't pollinate them either. Something to think about though. But then I'd be planting the seeds and soon be up to the mega seedling stage and just have to grow them out to see what they become.
Oy Vay! This is way too much fun!
Awww....JoanJ 16 is really not even getting started! You will want more.
I know Hibiscus, I DO want more, and I can see that more is never going to be enough. LOL! I'm glad to hear that I've only just started, so I've got a ways to go until my family hauls me away. When they do that though, I hope they are thoughtful enough to let me bring the brugs. :) I'd worry about them.
There's a whole brug world out there to be explored. I find these plants so fasinating. I think I'll try to pollinate some blooms this year and try to get a seedpod.
Joan, I think Cala and I have gone from few or none to what we have now in about 4 or 5 years. Many others here are in the same boat. I know tiG has oodles of brugs and seedlings and Hibiscus has gone crazy over them too. Everyone who gets one and really does love it, will end up getting a bunch more. If you and I had warmer temps for the winters, we would probably have a lot more than we do now. It wouldn't be so bad for me if I weren't addicted to other plants too. This year a new addiction....ears and bananas. So, as room gets tight for overwintering, I'm sure something will have to go, but WHAT?
Brugie, I was doing fine with only Charles Grimaldi for years, then added Frosty Pink and suaveolens white. I thought those were the only colors. Then I got a computer and the internet.....now there is no hope.
Ditto here Calalily!!!!!!
That is what happened to me Cala. I didn't know a brug from a hole in the ground until my friend gave me one and then two more the next year. Then my kids told me I needed a computer and I was then on a roll. It doesn't just happen with brugs either. I've gained a few more addictions since getting the computer and because of Daves and the great people here who have corrupted me into plant addictions. LOL!! I love each and every one of you and your plants. I just have no control.
I have a few of Cala's seedlings that I hope are going to bring me some doubles and aurea types myself. Most likely they will all be white, but one can always breed color into a double again if one gets lucky and then well who knows. To be honest though, if I got a high quality aurea white looking hybrid out of the mix though I sure wouldn't complain. Something with a nice strong intoxicating fragrance and a rebloom pattern like you wouldn't believe.
Yup, blame it all on DG...LOL
(and thanks everyone!)
