some close during the day

I noticed that some brugs close during the day. This is First Day.

Insignis Gold does it too as does a gold seedling that's blooming right now.

Is this last one a seedling as well Cala?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

No, that's Insignis Gold.
Maybe its that they close in the evening. I just took these pictures a little while ago. I'm here in the mornings, gone all day and it's after 5 when I get home so I miss seeing them during the daytime. I'll have to watch tomorrow.
Everlasting(seed from Harrenhauser Gartens) does it too.

They are all open now, and I noticed Ga Peach opens wider in the evenings. Maybe it's the insignis in them. Rosamond recurves more in the evening, but Butterfly is closed up now and was open earlier.
Here is Larry's pale pink, fully open now like it was this morning.

Here is Rosamond now, see how recurved the corolla edges are? Wonder if the ones that are more open in the evening/night are pollinated by nocturnal moths and the ones more open during the day are pollinated by diurnal insects?

Susie, your place must be beautiful now with all those gorgeous brugs blooming. I will watch mine more closely because I know that some close up and others don't. I was thinking that it was the heat that was making them close. Fall would also be a good time to watch since the weather is cooler all day.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Frannie, they did it here when it was cool too. It took a while for me to realize that it was a day/night thing though. I would go out in early morning and see some fully open, then in the afternoon they would be closed. I catch on slow, lol.

Frannie her plants do this, they wait till I leave to put on a fabulous show! Susie I checked last night after I got home and I have so many with buds! I can't wait!

I wonder if some are day/night openers?????

Good question Susie

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for information Susie. I am going to start watching mine more closely to see if they respond the same thru different seasons. This is interesting.

Tracey . . can't wait to see pictures of all your blooms. I know you can hardly wait for them to open.

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

All suavolens do it, much candidas, too, only the aureas keep the flowers open during the day. Also arborea, sanguina, vulcanicola and flava will keep open the flowers open during the day.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Bruno, I thought it was something to do with the suaveolens genes because those were the ones closing during the day. The aureas do stay open.

Our ver orange at work stays open 24 hours a day till its done.Is in some shade ..so go figure! :-)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

My Cypress stayed open all day today, but Butterfly folded up and didn't re-open tonight. Now what is wrong with that one? The color did become more intense today though.

ludger, I wondered the same thing and had to re-scroll...
lovely brugs, Cala - how many are you taking with you? or rather should I say, how many trucks will you need to take all your babies with you?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Pebble, I've got about 30 big pots to take and a lot of small gallon size and we won't talk about how many seedlings!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

lol - I was wondering how many you would try to sneak in.... It's like leaving your babies behind I imagine, all that hard work. I hope that you have entrusted them to someone, you know...in case that double pink emerges....
It's still an awful lot you are taking with you. I hope they travel well for you. When will you be moving by the way?

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Calalily, your photos of the brug blooms are gorgeous. I hope some day to have a bloom or two of different colors. Probably when i wasn't watching there was a reference to your moving. When and where. Hope you get to take a lot of them with you. large plants will be difficult won't they. Donna

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Pebble and Donna, we are moving in July to south Texas.

Susie,
Bring your AC kid-o....it's mighty hot outside here and I'm sure it's even hotter where you are going....but the winters will be well worth the hot summers. You might want to bronze your snow shouvel and hang it on the wall. LOL One winter we had a lot of snow in San Antonio and Ron was using the snow blower...this little boy passed and asked Ron what that machine was. I don't think the little boy had ever seen a snow blower before.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

That's so funny Glory. We were on South Padre the year they had ice in Houston. It was sort of funny watching the news with the people trying to drive on it! We're used to ice and snow, but they weren't. Their cars were freezing and everything!
