rain and fertilizing

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

It's been raining here every day and I need to fertilize my brugs with mg, already got slow release on. Do I go ahead and put mg on even though they don't need the water?

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Pam... i always sprinkle mg or peters on the ground and turn on the sprinker, i think you should be fine doing that if it's stilling raining on you. If you have a good seed and feed near you, i'd recommend osmocote with minors. my brugs are blooming so much better this year than last where i went cheap fertilizer and then oscmocote without minors. using the osmoscote with minors i don't have to use MG/peters unless i miss something and want to catch it up in a hurry. also being time released it goes by how hot it is so i don't have to worry about using it too close to winter.

Be careful sprinkling the MG on dry(I burned a few leaves)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

just from it landing on the leaves or what Cala??

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

No, from putting it dry on top of the soil and then watering it in. It only happened to a few plants, but the leaves turned brown in a few hours. It didn't kill the plants, but sure made a few of them ugly.(and my dutchman's pipe that was growing in the pot didn't like it either!)
I had done it lots of times before, and it has rained so much they really didn't need watered so I thought I'd fertilize them that way. I will stick with the Osmocote from now on. I went thru earlier this week and gave each pot a handful of Osmocote, just dug a little hole in the dirt and dumped it in. No burn. I like that!

thanks. I knew monika said not to do it, that it needed to be dissolved, but I wanted to make sure just getting some on the leaves didn't hurt.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

i wonder what happened to the leaves. i have done it that way forever and ever. last couple of years not very much though since using osmocote.
ah, reading again...i do this on things in the ground, not pots, maybe that's the difference.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Arlene, I think you may have hit on something there. It didn't hurt the things in the ground, only the ones in the pots. I'd done it all last year, and some this spring then all of a sudden, burned leaves. I had been really careful before to not use too much, but this time it was raining and I might have gotten sloppy measuring and put too much.

Thanks, ya'll. Do ya think if I go ahead and dissolve it to put it on, the plant will get some benefit from it or is it just gonna go right through (since it's already wet enough) and drain out any nutrients?

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

if the ground is soaked, it's not going to drain off. We've had so much rain, I've been fertilizing mine anyway. The days it doesn't rain they dry out real fast. just what I do.

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

Pam, pour it on the leaves, it's systemic, right?

Paxton, FL(Zone 8a)

Well, duh! Yes, Arlene it is. Didn't even think about that. I've some in ground and in pots, tiG. I'm just gonna do it. They need it and so many are in the blooming stage right now. Thanks ya'll.
