Sending a LARGE brug via mail

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I wanted to surprise my mom and send her the pictured plant. It's about three feet tall. It's suppose to be P&C, but is really Maya.
If I trimed the top, would it recover enough to bloom pretty quickly? Right now it is in bud. What is the largest plant you've ever mailed?
Thanks for your help.

You would only be trimming above the "Y"? That should not delay flowering too much. How about those really long Priority Mail boxes, three-sided, usually used for plans? (Do they still have those?) Maybe try the usps site to see what the largest box they have. It will be a nice surprise!

boy, you're really going to have to trim back to fit it in one of those boxes, they are pretty narrow. what about using a place that will package up for you? wider, taller box?

Yes, only above the "Y". I do have a really large box. I think I'll ship it over night mail. It will be worth it! She'll be thrilled.

Kristi-I would try and do a double box--one inside the other. The inside box should be used to to tie down the brug. If you use those plastic zip-handcuff things or anything else to tie is down cover your brug stem with cushion so the tie doesn't rub it. If you call a local florist they might have a wax coated box to help retain the moisture. And don't forget to put large red arrows on all sides "this side up" and "handle with care".

and I'd also tape the pot into the box so it doesn't shift and break the trunk. Had one come the other day and that happened. it will recover, but no sense taking a chance when it's this big. She's going to love it!

Great looking plant and I know if my daughter sent me a brug like that, I'd be so happy. Your mom will love it.

At my age, you would think I could spell right. That's why the edit on this one. Sorry!!

I have shipped large brugs but never budded ones. Here is what I do:
Remove from pot and shake loose soil from root ball,
remove largest leaves(there will be less chance of a broken stem if plants are removed from the pot because the edge of the pot can break a stem)
wrap the rootball with several layers of newspaper and secure with tape or rubberbands(keeps rootball intact and keeps it from drying out)
lay out several pages of newspaper, enough to reach from top to bottom and roll the plant in the newspaper.(just roll it up inside the paper, like an eggroll)secure with tape if needed
place plant in the box and fill all empty spaces with shredded paper, crumpled paper or peanuts to keep the plant from shifting. If you tape a plant to the side of a box and the box gets bent or crushed, your plant will get broken, if it's held in place with packing material, it has some give and the plant won't break as easily, plus it's easier to get out of the box once it arrives.
