How did they get to be so many? I've had my venus flytrap for well over a year and it's pretty scrawny.
Yeah, you have a very nice plant there
Hi Zippyanna.
Do you let it die back for the winter?
They are a perennial plant and need a dormant period to regain energy ,otherwise they will become weak with only a few small traps forming.
Mine are kept in about i/2 inch of rainwater in slight shade(this seems to enhance the green color).
Trim off all traps for the winter and allow the soil to remain moist without being saturated and keep cool, maybe down to 32F.
Come the Spring, new traps should start forming. At this point treat as normal ie:-stand in water-slight shade etc.
Here is a pic of the same plant after being divided and potted. They too look a bit scrawny now, but they will soon start to look like real VFTs
Hey Zippy
Have just seen your plant, thats not scrawny, it's a good perfectly healthy one year old plant.
Look after it and next season you too will be able to divide it.
flyplantsman, i was reading this thread and i am a little confused. Do they need full sun during thier growing period?
Hi Roof57mi
During the growing period they do well in either light shade or full sun, providing they are kept wet.
However it is my experience that slight shade seems to bring out a rich green coloration to the leaves.
Although sun enhances the redness within the traps.
Therefore if they can get a few hours of full sun a day they should give the best of both colors.
