Compost as Mulch

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

This past weekend, I went on a private garden tour of several homes. What a treat! Every garden used black compost as mulch instead of the common wood bark. Besides the obvious advantages of food for the plants and trees, I thought the contrast of black against the foilage and flower colors was striking. I plan to incorporate this into my own gardens in the future. How many use compost for mulch? It must break down faster than wood mulch though. Thoughts? Comments?
