I am growing my solandra up a stake, in a pot so I can keep it contained for winter storage. It is about 4 feet tall. How well will it work to snap off the top and produce a standard? I don't have an alternative, for space reasons. Will it bloom on the shoots? Will it ever bloom like this? Thanks.
Solandra as a standard?
That is promising to hear. If I saw them here in Canada like this I would question the idea, but knowing they like your climate it may be feasable. Thanks! Anyone else try this?
You shouldn't have a problem as they bloom on new growth. I have one in the yard that is 8 inches in diameter and 15 feet tall. Trim it all the way down once a year-still blooms and grows like crazy. We are talking about s. grandiflora or s. maxima right? I have grown those two.
I keep mine in a bush form and it goes in the GH for the winter and still blooms.....
I think the standard would be cool........
Thanks everyone. Yeah do they ever get huge! It just won't work until I get that 100' x 60' greenhouse. If only one were coming.
Dennis, I just got one today and I'm going to try to make a standard from it. Can't imagine that I would kill it after it reaches 5 ft. tall. Mine has a bit of a kink in the trunk, but I think I can work it out of it.
Dennis,
Even though we have super warm summers I keep both of mine in the GH. One of them is over 7 ft tall now and putting on new leaves. I ran fishing string up the side of the GH and the vine is wrapping it's self around the string and will then grow over the rafteres of the GH.
