Tree/Shrub shape of mature Dr. Suess and Rosamund?

Here's a little garden design dilemma I'm creating for myself: Which brug to put in the prominent display space in my front garden, as I'd like a more tree-like specimen...

My 2 new brugs, Dr. Suess and Rosamund are both producing lovely flowers, but I am more excited about the Dr. Suess's rich color. I don't know what these plants will look like in a couple of years, and I am totally willing to prune where needed. My question -- can anyone give an opinion or refer me to pictures of how these may look when mature? Or, if I wait a couple of years and watch them, can I dig them up (carefully) and move them?

Thanks!

Julie

you'll need to find out first if they are trunk cuttings or above the Y cuttings. If they are the latter, you will have bushes, which are quite lovely, but it's hard to plan without knowing what types of cuttings you have.

Here is a picture of Dr. Suess as a front yard tree. I assume you live where you can leave it out all year? With a few more years on this one and some pruning, it would have been a great tree. Unfortunatley as I recall, Owen cut it down for he had no room to overwinter it.

My best trees have been from suckers that I let grow very tall then I airlayer them to their own pot. My trees are not old enough to look great.

Sure you can move them, just prune the canopy so what is left of the root system can support it. I bet both would make nice trees.

the reason i said you might want to know what type cutting it is, is because a top cutting won't ever become a tall tree. Here is one and it's 3' at most and won't be taller.

and here's a trunk cutting that's over 8' tall.

Thanks everyone,

I'm new to this -- an obvious question...Is a trunk cutting simply a new or small limb that is cut FROM the trunk or main stem of the tree? (I know where 'above the Y' is, so I'm thinking this is what you mean...)

Thanks,

Julie

yep, you got it! it can be a shoot from the trunk or roots or the actual trunk cut into pieces. (lots of people do that in the fall)
good luck with whatever plan you have, and we love pictures!!!

TiG your 8ft tall brug is so pretty. I hope I can eventually get one that tall. Is it still in a large pot, looks like it in the photo. The cannas are very pretty with the brug. Donna

it's in a pot in the ground, like in monika's book. I have dwarf cannas I'm going to put in the front/sides, if I can find time! thanks:)
