It really is beautiful! I just bought my first one. How old is yours? I'm anxious for mine to get that big. A few of the leaves have dry brown spots about 1-2" inches long. Should I cut them off?

Boy, ksue, don't have a clue where you are so I'm kinda flying blind here. I'd say don't worry about the brown spots. Just keep babying it. When there's new healthy growth, then cut the browned ones off. This one is about three years old. Grown from a wee babe in a 3" pot. I water it thoroughly with a weak solution of Miracle Gro once a week. If she looks scorched, I turn the heat down a bit by slanting the blinds. If she looks like she needs a bit more light, I accomodate. Am I spoiling her? Sure! She deserves it! I've had three die. Two from scale, the scurge of these - and the other from a well-meaning care-taker who over-watered it (i.e. let it sit in in water for three weeks straight). I've grown these in several homes (Northern Indiana, Northern California and here, in So Cal) and they've always been my very favorite house plant. Where are you anyway? S

Hi stellpathic ! I'm in St. Petersburg Fl. I lived in Santa Monica in the early 70's.I had wonderful luck with all the house plants there. Had a creeping charlie that filled up a whole window! It was awesome. We even grew some "funny weed" back then that got to 5' in no time in a den with just light from a near by window. This is my first birds nest. It's doing well and likes daily misting. It's getting fuzzy trailers growing over the edge of the pot are they roots? How do you propogate? I live in a 3rd floor condo so it will be kept indoors.

Here ya go. I've not yet had the patience to try such a thing as collecting spores, however. Stella

"Propagation: Asplenium nidus is propagated by division or by spores. The ripe spores can be collected on a piece of paper placed under spore bearing leaves. Sow spores on damp peat moss in late winter. They germinate best at a temperature of 68-70 degrees (20-21°C). The growing medium should be kept constantly moist and covered with glass or plastic. Once new plants are large enough to handle they can be transplanted into individual containers."

It looks so happy in the McCoy!

Thanks for all the details on this lovely fern. I didn't know what I was getting a couple of months ago. It is in bright to moderate shade in a pot in the garden, and has grown fast but still a baby. So I need to get it in when nights hit the forties(I am in zone 7), and pick a perfect exposure. I have the spot! Maybe I will keep this thread for a year or two and send a picture!
