How much room do you have to garden?

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Poppy Sue's post http://davesgarden.com/t/383822/ got me thinking. How much space in the garden is enough? I have a little over a half a acre. About 1/4 of it I have planted. Plus I'm planting in a little garden plot on my street. Yet, I'm still running out of room. Not only am I addicted to brugs (yes I do admit it) I also have a passion for many other plants. Trying to figure out how to balance it all. What's everyones secret?

Kristi . . I have 3 acres outside so plenty of room, it's the inside that seems really small once I have to bring them in. But I can't help myself and end up getting another - it's small - is my reasoning or I just gotta have it. You know how it goes.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Takes years to get it all where you want the plants. We have over an acre, have moved some, gotten rid of some through the years, just now seeing things as I want them,
.............almost!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

We have about three acres, but since I'm not fond of dragging a watering hose around that is longer than 150 ft. I don't go far with my flowers. This year will be my first year to go all out on elephant ears. Most of my flowers will be tropicals except for the annuals that I've bordered the big bed with and others I've just stuck here and there.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I have a little over two acres but 1/2 of that is woods. My back lawn gets smaller every year when DH gets ahold of the tiller.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

we have 5 acres, but only 1 is not deep woods. I garden on every spot i can of that one acre.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have no idea how much I have, but it is so small. Mine is packed and you can't see dirt anywhere but in the brug seedling space and that won't be for long. Mine is overplanted for I have lots of plant interests not just brugs. However, my DH once had a lawn and now most of it is covered in brug pots. Mine used to have the look of being landscaped, now at least in the back it looks like a brug nursery. Next year I will only have the brugs I am absolutely in love with. The first year you want one of every kind, the second year you get more discriminating and the 3rd you start to toss! At least that is where I am heading.

city?? lol sticks, AR(Zone 7a)

*holds up mitt* kell Im wide open and indiscrimnate! you start to toss lemme know!! actually i was given many much cuttings this winter from wondermous ppl. I made the mistake of bringing a few pics to work and MY MY how my "friends came out of the wood work. Someone went to a nursery and found some brugs in bloom on display and came back to work the next day in awe--she had no idea her cuttings would turn into that with some luck and TLC. I havent got any blooms yet, but my dats are about to :) and Im hoping the brugs will follow soon.

Approx 2 Acres here! Only 1 Acre is garden, the rest is home to lots of wild rabbits! :o)

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I only have a 1/4 acre lot, including the space for our home. I have beds surrounding the house on every side, up the property lines and across the hill out back, plus a veggie garden/nursery bed. I am pretty much down to paths of grass between beds. I cannot wait until we can afford to move to acreage!!!

Woodburn, OR(Zone 8a)

gee, I wish I had acres! my back yard is only about 80 x 60 if you don't count the patio area, so I have to be really selective about what I want to plant. My lawn area keeps shrinking, I'm sure it will be paths between beds too by next summer! then I'll have to start thinking about the front lawn, hee hee!

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

I have 5 acres and it's pretty much a blank slate. We've planted lots of trees for the past 3 years, built a new house last year and this year are working on landscaping.

I have a huge veggie garden, and two years ago I turned part of that into a "holding bed" for perennials that I wanted but couldn't plant anywhere else until the house was done.

Some days I would gladly give away about 2 of these acres. It's so overwhelming sometimes, and by the time we get it all landscaped we are going to have a ton of money into it.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

But Joan, you will be so proud of it when it is finished and people who drive by or visit will love it. I can't wait to see what all you are doing to it.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Thanks Brugie. I try to visualize what it will look like in 3 years, 5 years, 10 years. That's what keeps me going I think. I'll post update pics as soon as the weather cooperates.

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Over 100 acres. Most in hay.
Plants take up only a few. ha

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sounds like so much fun Joan! Though I am too old now I think. Though if I stopped working I might be able to rally! 30 years ago I would have killed for a huge yard! But they are impossible to find in the Bay Area. 5 acres would be worth an incredible amount and they would fit so many houses on it you would be shocked! The median price paid for a Bay Area home was $426,000 last month. Land is at a premium. There is only about 10 to 15 feet between the newer houses and the backyards are not much deeper- -REALLY! My small yard is considered a good size for here for it is an older home.

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

Wow Kell! How about I bring 2 of my acres to your area and we can sell it off in parcels and make a killing!!! Then we will have lots of money to buy more brugs, hostas and whatever strikes our fancy!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sounds like a deal Joan.....LOL!! But we could not sell it for I would appropriate it for myself!! LOL

Belfield, ND(Zone 4a)

You can have part of it first. LOL

Uh Oh! I didn't mean to highjack this thread. Sorry.

Same here Kell! It makes it very hard for young people starting out! Hope the prices start to go back down soon!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

And the houses that go for that are not great! It is amazing. Houses that cost a million are nothing great. I guess we pay for the weather!

Yes, here also Bruno. I feel so sad for the young people that work for me. They have young families and are desperate to get into a house.
