Cold spring weather effecting bloom time?

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

I know many folks are getting hit with rain and very cool temps. How do you think it will effect bloom time this summer? Especially those in the cooler zones.

Right now, I'm guessing I won't get my main flush until fall. Anything outside has only grown a inch or two. Most are just sitting there looking the same as when I put them out weeks ago. They don't seem to be liking all the rain and cold.

Mine are still in the GH as the last two nights we've had a frost warning. It's supposed to be the last of the cold so they are going out this week. I'm sure the cool rainy weather will set them back some but hopefully once the sun comes out and summer finally gets here(hopefully it will)it won't take them long to grow and bloom. Once the ground dries out and you have to water give them plenty of food. For now you can foliar feed. Planting is very late up here for everyone. Memorial Day is usually when everyone puts in their veggie garden but not this year.

Datdog, who knows what to expect with this crazy weather? I think a lot will depend on what happens in the next six weeks or so.

I'm in a warmer zone that you are, but temperatures here have run about 10-15 degrees below normal for the last month. Right now while temperatures are staying in the upper 60's to low 70's, my brugs are growing like crazy. And one new cutting is covered in buds and should bloom in about 2 weeks. Most of my other brugs are just now putting on buds and I expect them to bloom well unless the weather becomes 90ish overnight and stresses them.

It seems that while temperatures here are pretty cool, there isn't much difference between day time and night time temps. The plants that are in full sun (when it's not raining) are doing really well, but the plants in part shade are healthly looking but growing much slower. But I had to move all of my hanging baskets (that normally do really well on my porches) to a sunnier location, as they were looking peaked.

If it doesn't get too hot too quickly for you, you may still have a summer flush of blooms. Nat

It's cold here too but one of my brugs has 12 buds? on it right now and a few are getting ready to open :)

Did you guys keep them growing all winter? The ones I had in the house all winter and kept growing do have buds. The cuttings, they have a LONG way to go.

Yes, I brought all of mine in for the winter and just as yours, my cuttings are growing slowly due to the weather

I have one large brug that I overwintered in the garage that never went completely dormant. It is full of leaves and looks very healthy but no sign of buds yet.

The two cuttings that I took from brugs last fall have just recently taken off growing and have developed uneven leaves - - so buds are coming. BUT they did nothing until the temps got up above 65.

I purchased 4 cuttings from Calalily's greenhouse in March, and all of these cuttings are now 2 to 3 ft high with multiple nodes and are putting on buds. When I got these cuttings they were about 8 inches high with just a few leaves. I potted them and put them under lights in my garage, and rolled them outside on warmer days. I put one in the ground in late April and it is the one cutting that is full of buds and should bloom soon.

Everyone I talk to is depressed about the weather! One in Tx. has had 100 degrees for days, no rain. Blooms last one day, then dry up, having trouble keeping things watered. We, on the other hand, are having rain almost everyday, dark, dreary, 40's. Nothing setting buds(brugs). Had no blooms last summer, as it was hot and dry, now it is dark, wet, cold everyday.

Hope this didn't make you depressed reading it..

I'm depressed not due to reading it, but being in it......lol

Today is a beautiful day in Iowa. More rains coming though. Things just need the warm weather to get going. The ground is still cold. One day we will all be begging for cool weather and rain. I guess this is just part of the total picture and right now it isn't what we want to see.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I have some buds, just noticed them yesterday.still cool here.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I know I have the better weather, but it has been really weird here also. We had the coldest spring in 35 years. Now one day it is beautiful, then the next it gets so cold and dreary then the next the temp soars to 90. I wonder if my plants are confused!

I wish you all beautiful blooms soon! If I coud send you some I would.

Kell, that is SO not nice! LOL I think I only have a chance of one blooming this year and that is the huge one Brugie sent me last year as a seedling. It is really going to town. My other ones have not even Y'd. Wah!!! Thanks for the tease.
