Tho I've been lurking here for the past week, I've just subscribed this morning. I love the plant database, (what a wonderful resource!)and the Watchdog. Using these two features, I think I've found the perfect plant to fill that semi-shady corner in the back of my sunny garden. Can't wait to see how it turns out!
I think I'll like the forums, as well.
I garden solo (no help with the heavy lifting), in my non-existant free time, so it's an uphill battle, but one I enjoy. Flowers and decorative foliage are my thing. I'm not much for growing veggies and fruits, tho the occasional herb is nice. Especially if it has decorative foliage, or nice flowers ... lol.
I hope that this is the year I will finally make order out of chaos in the back-yard. So far so good (knocking on wood!). This website is certainly helpful. The trick is going to be to stay out of Dave's Garden when I have free time to work in my own. =)
hello everyone, from South Louisiana
Hi sundry! Welcome from another relative newbie. You're right, you don't want to be on the computer when you can be digging, but DG is great after dark and on rainy days!
Welcome to Dave's Garden, sundry, from neighboring Texas. I am new to DG also and you will find some great people here.I'm familiar with your part of the country as the company that I worked for before retiring had a warehouse in Berwick and I had customers in Morgan City. I'll bet you can grow almost anything in your mild climate.
Bill
Thanx for the welcome etexbill, eanders2, and whiterose.
I just got back from Morgan City, etexbill. I'm about 25 minutes west of there. Yes, I can grow a lot in our climate, if it can take the heat and humidity ... The problem I'm fighting is soil - heavy clay. That and 7 oak trees on a small lot. I took two out last year, what an improvement! Now I can build raised beds in sunshine!
Where in Texas are you? Texas is so huge! I have a sister near Katy, TX and an aunt in Beaumont.
eanders2, today is a good day to have joined Dave's Garden, since it rained all day. That's not a complaint, since it's the first rain we've had in 6 weeks, but it's good to have a place to "garden" when I can't actually work outside.
Thanx again for the welcome.
sundry
sundry: I'm in Lindale, a small town near Tyler in the heart of East Texas. Small world, I was just in Katy, last week. I visited a water garden supplier there. I also went to Katy Mills, the huge outlet mall. I could spend a week there. I know what you mean about heat and humidity. We have the same here, except maybe not quite as humid. You had rain! Please send some up here.
Bill
lol, Bill! I'd be glad to, if I could. My sister is saying the same! But we really needed the rain.
We are gradually getting used to this whole "drought every spring" thing ... not too many years ago it was unheard of here. I just hope it doesn't turn out like 2 years ago, when it finally started raining it didn't stop for a month!
Well, it is a small world, isn't it? I've never been to Tyler or Lindale, but I always enjoy visiting my sister's place. It's soooo different but still kind of the same, if you know what I mean. I hope we can get out there next month, maybe. My sister and her family is planning to come here for a visit this month. It's crayfish season, ya know ... =)
Hi sundry! Waving from south west KY!
We got some neat folk in LA. justmelisa is in Thibadoux and redrose is in New Iberia.
Welcome!
Waving back at ya, melody!
It's so nice to meet you all. looking forward to meeting some Louisiana gardeners, too.
Sundry, hello from the far north! Every year is the year that I'm going to make order out of chaos, too!! ;-)
That's never actually happened for me, but maybe it will for you -- but then what will you do with all that free time?? Happy gardening to you, chaos or not!!
Welcome, and this site will certainly help unravel your chaos!
Candee
Thanx for the welcome, haighr, Weedwhacker, and bitty1.
Weedwhacker, I don't truly believe that order will ever reign in my world, I just want it to assert itself more. LOL Chaos definitely has the upper hand. But I can dream, and just 'cause you can't win the game doesn't mean you shouldn't play ... [grinning] playing is fun.
haighr, you are right about that. I'm finding lots of USEFUL info here, unlike a lot of other gardening sites. I haven't been here 2 weeks and it's already made a difference. The organizational tools alone are a blessing.
The knowledge collected here is staggering, but not intimidating. I hope to be able to contribute something useful to the site at some point.
Hi Sundry and welcome. I am also a solo gardner, justs takes me a lot longer to get things done!
Hello from the dry side of Oregon. We're glad to have you join our gardening party. I know what you mean about trying to make order out of chaos, battling nature and trying to make it look natural. And all the time Davesgarden is calling, such a subtile temptation, I have to limit myself to short breaks, when my tea is gone I go back outside.
nice to meet you both, MaryE and weeds.
It takes a lot longer, gardening solo, weeds. There are so many things I want done, NOW and I just don't have time to do them all. Priorities are a must. So frustrating when the weather doesn't cooperate ... sigh
It does sometimes feel like a battle with nature, MaryE, but I prefer to think of it as a game we play. Nature usually wins, unfortunately. Right now my garden is looking way too natural ... it's been raining for 4 days now. Everything is growing, especially the weeds.
Hi sundry, I just found you...so glad to have a neighbor join in! I pass through Franklin often, about once a month. A great big hi from "down duh bayou"!

Welcome Sundry, I am new also from Kentucky. I need some help from all you wonderful landscaping people. I want to re-landscape the front of my house with different colors of shrubs, etc. The front is quiet shady, so I'm not going to try flowers. I would love some ideas on a colorful foliage landscape.
p.s. love this site!
Hello, syu48. Welcome to DG. You should start a thread on this forum, so that we can all get to know you.
If you post your questions about shrubs in the Trees & Shrubs forum (http://davesgarden.com/f/tas/ ), or your landscaping questions in Garden Talk (http://davesgarden.com/f/gardentalk/ ) or some of the other forums, I know you would get some good suggestions.
Wish I could help ... What zone are you in? (you could input that info on your member page, so it would show up every time you post)
Once again, welcome!
Cheri'
