Oh my! How wonderful! Where did you get it?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Beautiful banana. Wishing you lots of luck with it. I don't give banana advise since I have trouble growing them. Good luck and I hope it has lots of babies this year.

I got it from rpetropicals.com butttt... my experience was not that pleasant really, they sent a really large plant to make up for it I believe. I ordered over 4 months ago, and they said it was in stock and would be shipped right out and then i emailed them 2 months later said where is my banana and they didn't answer so i mailed agian last week and told them listen i ship tons of plants a week for my business can't believe i haven't heard anything from you in 4 months on a 100.00 plant, anyways i was rude hahah they emailed back we're very sorry it will be there next week and there it is ! So big! The one for 100.00 was only supposed to be a 4" so plant quality is nice, but cust service isn't!

$100. for 4inch? WOW! But the pictures I've seen of it are spectacular.

Katrina... Doing a happy dance for you! ... You should let the leaf die and dry before trimming them off..That will not matter much right now but it is best to let them alone as it grows,, This one likes a slightly acid PH and protection from the afternoon sun.. alot of people keep them in pots for some reason here.. most likely due to South Florida's less than ideal soil : ) .. They are slow to pup and bloom.. but a grower near me gets hers to bloom and pup year after year... Ha! that reminds me I need to see if she has come down on the price yet!

John I wonder what exact ph they like? I put mine in a 7 gal pot for now, i bet for same reason its easier to control the surroundings and everything when its in a pot I know mine will be in the greenhouse this winter hahah ! How long has that lady has hers???? Are hers cheaper than 100.00? If so I might be interested in a couple more :)

Katrina

Katrina, Ive lived here about 7 years now and she had them when I 1st came down, they were not for sale then at any $ ! Her nursey- garden is on a small island north of Ft Myers .. Last time I looked , about 3 years ago they were in the 100.00 range .. Will have to check it out..
As far as PH .. the only thing I remember her telling me was slightly acid..She had a bunch of bannana's from it and they were variegate too! The place is a jungle and make Lisa's picture look tame ..but the pots are weeded and the drive is great.. you get to go by a real funky old Florida fishing village..

I might have to drive down there one day would love to see oen with lots of pups maybe get me a soil sample so i can mimic what she's doing haha but it doesn't always work like that does it?!?!? HAHahhaha Pray for my lil banana hahaha hubby got mad because I took it to my nursery to pot it up with good soil and had to have it ride in the front seat with us!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

If I spent $100 on a plant, I'm afraid that Jim would have to ride in the back seat of my truck so I could belt the plant in and have air bag protection for it.

Old Town (Gainesvill, FL(Zone 8a)

Hahahhaha so you agree with my plant riding up front huh?!!? HAhahah everyone has told me I should sleep with the thing :)

I saw some of those yesterday at Stokes, they had the big AE AE for 900.00. They also had the little ones, I don't know what they were selling for. My friend and I giggled, I stated if bought the 900.00 one showed it off to folks, they would haul me off in a little white suit with my hands tied behind my back. The plants didn't look like they were worth 50.00. Lots of brown 'burnt' looking spots on the leaves, either from too much fertilizer or to much exposure to something..

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

These plants like some noonday shade or the leaves will scorch. mine gets dappled shade from Summac trees overhead in summer. Feed very sparingly..too much nitrogen means green foliage. water when needed and I keep mine cool and on the dry side in winter.Cool banana plants need little water. Here was mine last summer.

That is the MOST awesome foliage.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Nice plant Kyle. Was last summer the first year for it?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Shirley, yep..grew it from a pup. slow growing though. I have seen these in Calif nurseries for as little as $79.00 for a twin trunked plant of about 7 feet in height. Not common, but most don't want to shade them to keep the burn off them. They usually won't pup till they get about 10 feet tall.Unlike most other bananas that can pup at 4 feet tall and taller.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I'd pay $79 for one the size you mention. The problem would be keeping one over the winter at that size and at that price, you would have to keep it until you could get a pup or two growing. I'll be doing well to get what I have to grow and look like something. If the winds don't stop, I'll have only shredded leaves.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I guess I have something new to look for......LOL! But was that in So Cal Kyle?

Good luck on yours Katrina! It is a beauty!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

It was so weird, last night I had a dream that I came downstairs in the morning and looked out at my backyard and there were 2 huge ones of these. And I thought to myself that how odd I did not know I had these growing and that I must really go out and get a picutre of them to post. LOL........I do not even have an upstairs!

Eclipse: That is an impressive looking banana. But then I like any plant that is variegated. At first I thought the flowers on your shirt were the flowers to the banana.LOL.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Katrina, how did yours do? I just got one this week and am anxious! I can't decide if I should keep it in my dining room or in my hoophouse.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)
