Im not sure that anyone will have an answer for this one----I planned on adding another bed this winter as I have wayyyyyyyyyyy too many plants, but didnt get it done. My day lilies, asiatic and oriental lillies have really gotten huge and are starving my seedlings of light and my roses of circulation. They are all either in bloom or about to bloom. Can i cut back the day lilly straps, and the other lilies as well after they bloom and still get blooms next year? I would like to do the same to my iris, but Im not sure if it will cost me next years bloom or maybe even the whole plant? Your thoughts would be appreciated. cheryl
day lily question?
Yes - I think you'd be safe cutting all of them back and moving after they bloom. It shouldn't hurt next years blooms as long as you give the plants enough time to re-establish themselves before winter sets in.
thanks so much poppy sue :) Im really needing the space and circulation!!!
Daylilies are tough. I've moved blooming plants around by digging the entire rootball up and plopping them into a new hole. If you keep them well watered they'll hardly notice.
you can thin them and send them to me ;)
*giggle*
playsndirt: I just started a new day lily bed last fall. If you'd be interested in a bulbs/fans for postage I'd love some too! Everything I put in is doing well but it's really sparse.
