A lesson learned Building a pond

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

Finished my pond and went on a river raft trip. When I got back it had rained 4.2 inches that night.Did not design a overflow into the pond. About 15 foot of rock and rubber liner on one side slid into the pond. Lesson! Make one place on the low side to overflow into a manmade creek. Will keep the water from going under the liner. Had to drain the pond and remove the dirt and rock. Used some concrete blocks and 40 concrete 12 X 12 paving stones to build up the damaged area. Took only about an hour to drain it with the three inch valve I put in. Over 8 hours to fill though.

oh man. so sorry!!!

OUCH! That is a hard earned lesson!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Ted, that really stinks! BUT, you can make it even better now. :) I have great faith in you.

ohhh Ted, That is a hard learned lesson indeed. Another point many people don't remember is to put an above ground pump lower than the lowest water level but make it so that the pump won't get flooded if it rains more than normal. Put the pump on a gravel base with a cover over the whole thing to protect the pump from the elements.

You have had to learn many hard lessons but along the way you are teaching others who are watching the threads. I thank you for that.

Good luck with your redesign of your pond. Lani

Today it rained again and I grab the umbrella and out I go to see where the water goes. Still found two spots where the run-off was going under the liner. DW thought I was nuts walking around the pond in a storm. Looks like I am ready to add some plants now.

Yippeeee!!! You are going to have lots of fun figuring out what plants you want. I love that part :>)

Plants???? Ok now is my chance to help you out, hehe. What can I send ya dear?

Kingston, OK(Zone 7a)

I got a 5 gal bucket full of water lily's from a friend so now have 7 containers in the pond. Dont know what color I will get. Other then that I need some plants for the 4x7 gravel filter, the stock tank (bio filter) and something else for the pond. Planted 11 Brug's around it in diffrent places.

By the way I found something to use for my skimmer opening. Used a range hood vent cover for an RV. Goes thru the box and has a door on it that I can close when I want to use the bottom drain only. A little modification and it works great.

Send me your address offline please. I think I can find something that you can use :-).

Toadlily Got the plants you sent and in good shape. Thank you so very much. Now tell me how to plant them. The one with stalks and root I planted in the gravel. The rest just float??
Say I know where to dig up some varigated elephant grass.
Some say it is invasive but mine so far is not. In two years it has only grown about two feet out. Will add picture if anyone interested.
