Black Beauty

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

I have four different Iris in the 'Beauty' series. The first to flower is Black Beauty. I love the green, purple and gold.
The others look as if their buds will burst at any moment :)

Lolol Loph! Sure does ;)

That's a lovely collection of colours. They must have flowered really early to be out with your daffodils farmgirl!

Hempstead, TX(Zone 8b)

yes, real early i think back in march. i used to have my camera post dates but i guess it got lost lol. i had some real unusual colors even dh commented how pretty. will they multiply each yr?

Incredible colour! This is one I will look out for:) Are they very picky about winter wet?

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

I had some a few years back, well they were Gypsy Queen but very similar, which lasted about three years planted straight in the garden. Then they disappeared. I'm on heavy clay, so this time I'm trying them in pots, with a free draining compost mix

Thanks philomel; have the same soil-problem here; fat peaty clayish soil without any drainage... Please post more photos as the other Beauties starts to flower!

I certainly will :)

Here's Black Beauty a little more mature. The green falls are darkening so that the name 'Black Beauty' is more apt...

Now Gypsy Beauty has opened to show striking green falls with lovely pencilling

This potful of Gypsy Beauty is the most successful. They're not all out yet, but there are loads of flowers to come

I just checked my photos from last year and yours seem to be mixed a wee bit

'Black Beauty' http://www.marksgardenplants.com/sp-iris-dutch4.html
'Oriental Beauty' http://www.marksgardenplants.com/sp-iris-dutch1.html
'Silver Queen' http://www.marksgardenplants.com/sp-iris-dutch2.html
'Gypsy Beauty' below

but maybe mine are wrong!

but I did just find 'Gypsy Beauty' on the 'net which is fact 'Black Beauty'!! http://www.midcitynursery.com/bulbs/Pictures/di-gypsybeauty.jpg

So none of them seem to be like the one I have as Gypsy Beauty! An original - will have to name it....*G*

Mine were all bought in sealed packs with photos on. Gypsy Beauty was definitely illustrated as very similar to Gypsy Queen which I have grown in the past - purple/blue and orange/yellow - not like your white and yellow one at all.
So that was very like the illustration you found on the web, but not a lot like this one http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&q=Iris+Gypsy+Queen

The plot thickens LOL

that Gypsy is a Bearded Iris. We'll have to wait for mine to flower this year.

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Yes, that's why it was 'not a lot like......' LOL

Anyway here are both Gypsy Beauty (left) and Black Beauty (right), to show that they don't look the same. There is more than just a subtle difference
I've always seen Gypsy Beauty this colour in illustrations - not yellow and white.

Well at least we seem to have the same one for Oriental Beauty Mark - though this photo is nowhere near as good as yours. My camera was struggling with the early morning light. I'll try taking another later

actually I think my Black Beauty is 'Bronze Beauty' http://www.marksgardenplants.com/sp-iris-dutch4.html.

My plants dont like where they are :-( some of them look like they are dying just as the fat buds are ready to burst

Couldn't get your link to work, but the one that hasn't flowered yet for me is Bronze Beauty, so it'll be interesting to see how that turns out.

Where have you got yours?
I put two lots in plastic pots and the other two in terracotta. The ones in plastic have thrived, but the ones in terracotta have struggled (haven't watered them enough probably)

These are beautiful; whatever name they might have! Where did you buy yours?

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

Thanks arsenic :)
They are available quite freely here in garden centres in late summer into autumn (though they should go in earlier rather than later)
I got mine from 2 or 3 different garden centres

here's another photo of Oriental Beauty

Not such a good shot - in rather a hurry!
This is my Bronze Beauty, the one and only flower, so it was now or never LOL
