My first brug and datura seedlings are growing like CRAZY! A few I'll plant in my yard, but I have too many, so I want to pot some up to give away. (I can't bear to thin these seedlings, they are just so happy to be alive!!) Do they like to be root bound? should I pot them up into bigger pots as they grow, until they are big enough to leave home or would they be happier if I didn't disturb the roots and just transplant them into big pots now? I'm in trouble, I have a feeling this is going to be so much fun, I can already tell I'll be a brug maniac before the end of the summer!
baby brug question...
don't pot them up to a much bigger size right away. they can take being potbound, Tim kept his in 4" pots for a year!
I've grown mine in pots and in the ground. I must confess that each time I repot mine they go through a mild shock and this sets back their growth as repotted plants go through a slight shock. Potting in too large of a pot will generally result in over watering though and this can result in a wilting plant from excess water and the subsequent death of said plant. Planting in the ground allows them to grow much faster as they do not get set back each time one repots and they can grow at a more natural rate as anyone who has grown brugs in pots can attest...the size of the pot will influence how big a brug can get. I have kept seedlings looking like seedlings by keeping them in 4-6inch pots for over 6 months as well. Just think of bonsai plants. Small pots=small root system. On the other hand, if one plants in the ground one must be prepared to move them indoors and pull them up roots and all or take cuttings come late fall or at least before danger of frost. I grow mine outdoors and in the ground when I am confident I can force 1-2 seedlings from a cross to bloom before the freezes set in. Obviously not the smartest idea if one is only growing for color or form.
Wow! Datura bonzai!!! Okay I won't have to rush out and buy a big bunch of potting soil then~ I have six different brugies, I've never grown them before so I can't wait to see what colors they are, and I have about twenty double purple datura, from an old moldy, rotted looking seed pod I found, I didn't think they would even germinate but they popped right up! maybe I'll make them into a big hedge!!
Lol, I should have looked a bit closer as I don't have too much experience with Datura. As small as they seem to stay and as quick as they bloom I would't worry too much.
