Now, we just need some sunshine to get these babies in bloom. Haven't seen the sun for weeks except for this day and they are ready to open any minute!
I'm Coming Out
OMG Candee! How many are in there?? Did you plant them all??? Wow!
Hundreds! They were established in the pond at the cottage we got up at the gap, so not my doing. I planted a lotus to get it started and may need to find out how to keep them from taking over the entire place!
O~;!
Candee, to keep a lotus at bay in a pond I just put the pot that it is planted in inside of another much larger pot at least five inches below the rim of the larger pot. Thus you have a pot within a pot.
I put mine in a large plastic container and it has about 4"of water over it, will that work? Haven't seen a sign of sprouts yet, but haven't had any sunshine for 3 wks here!
Gorgeous! It looks like Spatterdock http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/wq/plants/native/nuphar.html
That is spatterdock.....
Have tons of it growin in the lake........
LOL Candee, that isn't a pond, it is a lake! Break out the boat and let's go fishing!
I just looked at that Spatterdock hyperlink. According to it that stuff has massive roots! Not exactly right for my wee pond but it sure looks nice on that lake of yours!
Wow, thanks for the info. Will need to find out how to thin some of it out. LOL Zany we build a floating dock on barrels and just paddle ourselves out to the middle to fish! Come on over and join us sometime!
I would love to! Promise to let me keep the little trout and not make me throw them back? I just love the little ones fried up on an open fire outdoors but these days most people make you toss the wee ones back!
We've caught a few large and smallmouth bass and lots of sunnys (blue gill). Need to weed out the bluegill as they eat the bass eggs.
Hope my lotus works out in the pond as I am a bit disappointed to find out these aren't water lilies.
How about some fried frog legs Zany? We had some last weekend and they were fabulous as appetizers!
Yummy! But as appetizers? The ones we get here are 2-3 times the size of chicken legs and are definately a main course! Are the little ones sweeter or are yours a smaller breed of bullfrog?
They are a pretty good size frog, the legs 4-5" maybe longer. The bodies are as big as Steve's open hand. The legs aren't much bigger than chicken legs. Would have to get quite a few to make an entire meal out of them. They are large compared to frogs normally found around here.
Do you eat the breast? Most people do not know that it is not only edible but tastes great!
No, never heard of that! Thanks will have to ask Steve about that breast part?
Clean the body cavity out, skin the frog and cut the head and feet off. Dredge the entire frog and pop it into hot oil deep enough to almost cover it. Turn it once, remove when golden brown and drain on paper towel. Serve hot, and eat everything but the bones. In the unlikely event you have leftovers, remove the meat from the bones and put into a covered bowl with a bit of relish and mayo. This makes a great sandwich spread. I like to toast some crusty slices of Italian bread and spread it with a scant covering of horseradish, then add the frog salad. But it's really difficult to have enough left over for everyone to have a sandwich.
LOL and I was beginning to think no one else ate anything but the legs! Good to know someone else out there doesn't waste the bulk of the critters!
hmmmm I have several months supply of frogs legs in my pond for everybody here at DG. Just need to learn how to catch the things as they bark and jump so fast!
Will have to try the body parts, thanks for letting us know that it is the best part.
Ponditis, get a gig and flashlight. At night you shine the light on them and they freeze and then voila gig em! Or do it the easy way like Steve and Tim, get your 22 and shot em in the head.
frog gigs are not available here. Our son shot two of them and they sunk into the bottom of the pond. :( No more shooting here.
We sure have hijacked this thread with our frog talk. LOL just like DG folks to start talking about food. LOL
Gigs are illegal in some states, as are lights at night. I don't know which states are still enforcing it, but it was a huge issue in the 50s. You weren't supposed to use any method that put the frog at a disadvantage or broke the skin. How you were supposed to catch them remains a mystery. As students living on the GI bill, we managed to find many good frog meals.
sniffle.....
poor frogie......
Better than Chicken!
Oh yes, deep fried they were really good!
Oh My, I only eat vegetables, fruit and cheese...and lots of beans and rice. I really love my giant bull frogs, tree frogs and toads. My neighbor keeps saying he is coming over to get one. I told him that would be a BIG Mistake. I have 8 dogs here now...hehe.
Of course, they will eat the frogs if they can get to them. We have first pond area fenced in and only Rosco is allowed to go in there to chase the lizards. He never gets them.

the bullfrogs here eat my baby koi which are raised for sale
Nice pics - they both look very content!
I gotta get some of them frog legs,I will bring a 9iron and chip em up onto the raft!
Did you ever find some cat tails?I thought you asked before?
Got some from crestedchik, thanks. No will have to find out about getting waterlilies since these are spatterdock!
Come on over for froglegs any time, might be a difficult way to catch them!
a friend told me that when he was a kid he used to use a fishing pole and line and bait the hook with just a piece of red rag. Our son tried it tonight and in 5 minutes he had caught two big frogs. Yippeee!!!! The baby frogs won't be eaten by the adult ones this year after all. It is the baby ones that eat the bulk of the mosquitoes here.
