getting weirder looking by the day!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I only am trying to hang on to these because the lady who gave it to me told me it was a La Paloma Blanca. I think I will try to go to her house in the next few weeks to check hers out but she is a couple of hours away.

This is a pot of 3 cuttings. I think I read some that if a brug has a virus, you can't root its cuttings.

I do not know if this is true. These were 3 cuttings and I rooted them. The leaves look much worse than this in real life.

So, Kristi, did you keep your plant? Whenever I have had any looking somewhat like this, seems warmer temps, sun, less moisture(rain) they grow out of it.
Mine did. Hope this is the case with Kells' and yours.

Kell and Dat, I am so glad to see this post, because I have noticed some really bad looking stuff on my Species, and though I do not know what mosaic virus looks like, the name looks like the leaves on my double species. I will be sure not to prune it with the un sterilized pruners.

Gee Kristi, yours looked worse than mine.....LOL! I noticed that my wisteria has some mottling also.

I read that bleach will not kill viruses. You have to boil your cutters in boiling water for 5 minutes. So I have been doing that and what a pain it is. Next time I go to the farmers market I am going to look for a big old pot. My DH is having fits when I use the good pots.

So does anyone know if it is true that a virused brug's cuttngs won't root?

We need a virus expert on here. I guess it is good that we don't for it must mean that most have no viruses.........LOL!

I have been boiling too Kell but have been thinking about using one of those flame throwers that you use to light a gas barbeque on my clippers. What do you think?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have never seen one Liz. I wonder how long you have to hold it against the cutting part to work. Is it a small flame? My clippers have so much plastic.

I was wondering if I bought some of the liquid sterilizing chemicals we use to soak our surgical instruments in, if that would work. I found some stuff that takes 10 minutes and it supposedly kills most things. It doesn't weaken as bleach does over 10 days, you can reuse it until it gets too dirty, which is good for it is expensive. It even kills HIV and that is a virus so it still should work, right?? I guess I could buy an autoclave like we have at work.........LOL!

I got nervous and tossed mine in the picture. I do have another one that showed a slight molting this winter. I didn't toss that one. I've since put it outside and all the new growth is normal.

I'm also getting tired of boiling my clippers. Getting ready to by a few more pair.

I have 6 I use Kristi and I still need more. I like to boil them all together at the end of the day.

Brugs are susceptible to cucumber mosaic virus, it manifests itself in cool weather, clears up in warm weather, won't kill the plant but will make it spotty. Lots of plants in the garden and landscape(including weeds) are infected with it. It is spread by insects and by garden tools that weren't disinfected.

So it is a losing battle...........we might as well learn to live with it!
