Why does he do it?

Zone 6, OH(Zone 6a)

Lincoln (1 yr old golden retriever) will many times cover up his food (that's in a bowl) with grass or hay. I finally saw him doing it today in his pen. He has hay in his doghouse and he was using his nose to push hay up on top of his food. He won't eat it after that. I can't figure out why he's doing it. It's happened several times now.

The ONLY thing I can think of is he wants to keep the blue jays from eating it? Blue jays will fly down and eat his food (not much) occasionally.

Anyone ever heard of dogs doing this?
