Wiskey Keg Planter

St. Louis, MO(Zone 6b)

Frank's Nursery had a 50% sale on selected items and their collection of Jack Daniel Wiskey Kegs was one of the items. Solid Oak, weighing about 40 lbs with iron straps. The inside surface is charcoaled [added flavor to the burbon]. Has anyone used them for planting their brugs? I plan to drill drainage holes in the bottom and mount them on casters for ease of moving. Will the old wiskey fumes make the brugs drunk :-). How shall I prepare the inside surface, if at all?

Padre,
Can't help you on this one...so how's the GH coming along?

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Padre I've got two in front of my garage that I had Brugs in last year and they did fine with just drainage holes in the bottom. This year I'm going to put Brugs in that I want to keep over next winter so I'll use Monika's way of drilling holes in the pot and placing the pot in the barrel and fill in with dirt around it. It will be much easier to pull the pot out than try to dig the plant out in the fall.
If they take in too many Bourbon fumes and turn limp just tie them to a stake till they sober. ;)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

hehehe!!!

St. Louis, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks SnowHermit, I figured that at $10 ea. I couldn't go too far wrong. Got me a dozen. Now to find a sale on casters :-) Glory, right now the greenhouse is filled with brugs, 130 of them, some named, some unnamed, 65 in two or three gallon pots (including the 9 cuttings you sent me) and the remainder awaiting potting up from 4 1/2" pots to one gallon pots. The University staff were so pleased with the work that the volunteers (Aotearoa et. alii)and I did in restoring the greenhouse they decided to give us a new evaporative chiller to replace the old rusted out one. I'll post pictures when its installed. It's here, but with all the rain this past week the crew is awaiting a sunny day to do their thing. The unit is also one inch wider than the exit to the roof. Looks like they might have to remove the door to get it through.

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

Wow Padre!!! You got a real good deal at $10.00. They run about 24.99 around here. Don't blame you for grabbing a dozen.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

That is a good deal!

They are way to expensive for me here.

By chance ,do any of them come with the Jack??????

St. Louis, MO(Zone 6b)

crestedchik, I'll bring one to the NERU to swap for some of your brug plants if you wish [and if you can fit it in your vehicle to get it home]. I actually took 13 (all they had) but wanted an even number, so I'm dumping the extra one. Couldn't resist a bargain. As Blondie was want to say, "Dagwood, I saved you a lot of money today." :-) The only thing left of the Jack is the aroma. I was wondering what a policeman would say if I had been stopped while transporting them back home. He would surely think I was drinking and make me do the finger-to-nose and walk-a-straight-line bit.

Burlington, ON(Zone 6a)

I had Brugs planted in 4 of them last year and they did just fine.
This year I also am going to do the 5 gallon pot with the 2" side holes in it and sink this pot in the 1/2 barrel and just lift that out in the fall. Those suckers are too heavy to move and take up too much room in the GH when it comes time to move them in for the winter, casters or no casters! I did not drill any extra holes in the bottom but be sure to leave the stopper out of the hole that is there if one came with the barrel.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Padre,I'll pay you for it plus give you some flowering size brugs to put in your barrels.....

And I can deal with the Jack Aroma....gee,wonder how it will mix with the brug scent?????

I have a PU truck so I'm sure it will fit, especially when I unload all my plants I'm bringing for all of you!!!

You should have seen when I brought a blooming size brug in my tractor cab to give to someone........it will be much easier in my pick up........

St. Louis, MO(Zone 6b)

RA49, Thanks for the reaffirmation of there being no preparation necessary before using the kegs for brugs. I too will insert the 5 gallon pot into them. I will be placing them on concrete walks which are no longer used for pedestrian traffic. The walks used to go from the gates along Fordham Rd. to the front entrance of the various buildings on that side of the campus. The gates have long since been welded closed. However, the tubs may have to be moved occasionally when the university sends its large gang mower to cut our front lawn. The casters will also make it easier to swap out plants which are currently in bloom to take the place of those which have finished blooming. Just dreaming, of course. This being my forst year I have yet to have any bloom.

St. Louis, MO(Zone 6b)

crestedchik, I hope the PU refers to the type of truck and not the aroma of brugs and burbon :-)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

LOL! two funnies in one thread!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I loved planting in these big barrels. They have so much room you will be able to put all sorts of blooming annuals around the sides to spill out and down the outside for added interest with the brugs. You will have to take pictures of them all. Sounds like you are really going to make everything beautiful!

Bodrum, Turkey(Zone 10a)

Padre, what a grreat deal you made....as kell said, those will look cool with annuals cascading down...
I can just envision you getting stopped and having to do the walking test...wonder if one can get tipsy on the fumes?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

The PU stands for Pick up truck......usually...

But after I clean out the barn it'd definatly a PU(Pee Yew) truck......and Jack D and the brugs will NEVER smell that bad!!!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I have one brug in a barrel this year. I've always put cannas in them until two years ago, but they were too hard to dig out. I like the idea of putting a big pot inside. Sure would be easier to get it out than to have to dig. Too late for this year, but I'll sure remember next year.

Biel, Switzerland(Zone 7a)

Oh Padre,I hope I get a chance to see you and your Brugs when I am Stateside!! I know those gates along Fordham,so I will keep an eye out for them.

Thanks everybody for the affirmations and encouragement. Nothing different in my care of the plants. Just TLC according to the advice found here in this Forum.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Bump,LOL! Sorry,I got reading this thread and laughing,I was wondering if the 9 pointed Brug got planted in one of these Padre?

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

I got to reading this and thought to myself.....I have 2 huge whiskey barrels out by the pool (FULL sun) and would love to put brugs in them. Is there are brug that could take full Oklahoma sun??? I would love to try them. Right now I have them full of lisianthus. How would this look with a brug growing up in the center of it? Inquiring minds really need to know? Is there a brug that could handle the full sun?

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Brinda, I have a brug in one on the front deck. It gets the hottest sun of the day out there. The deck floor is so hot that I can't walk on it without shoes on and the brugs have done well over the last few years. In fact, they are basically living in the same soil each year.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Gee Brinda, I will stand in your barrel for you if you let me jump in your pool once in awhile!

Sorry, most of mine take full sun here.

Yukon, OK(Zone 7b)

Don't make me guess Shirley....which brug is it??? I really want to give it a try!!! But this really is FULL sun.....no shade from beginning of the day to the end!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Last year I had a seedling in it that didn't get to bloom before frost. I've had different ones in it. This year it is Georgenpalais and she is about ready to bloom.
