Van Engelen prices up over 50% from last year

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

I had written up a list of items I was interested in from last year's catalog - saw that the new online catalog was.

The prices are 51% - 68% higher!!!!! of the items I was interested in.

Is this possible? Are all other bulb prices going up this much from other suppliers?

It's a pity - I had a large order planned - upwards of 2000 bulbs. Probably not at these prices.

wow........that seems like a lot to me too sandra. well you won't have to dig as many holes anyhow. :)

The dollar lost a lot of it's value compared to last Fall.....between 20 and 30%. Now some suppliers had pre-sold their dollars earlier and gotten a good price for them and maybe they did not. Best thing to do is to shop around.

And that is because they are the WHOLESALE part of McClure and Zimmerman! I got the M&Z catalog but not Engelmanns yet.

Sandra do you have both? How do they compare?

I went into the M&Z website the other nite. I am legally blind and could not even tell what the words were when you go to look for specific bulbs.

I wrote and complained. Also asked about any clearances on summer bulbs since I had just looked at Brent and Becky's Bulbs where they are having a fabulous 50 percent off sale.

Got a rude little not back this am. (!)

Hi Lavanda - compared to McClure and Zimmerman, the Van Engelen prices are still lower (upwards of 50% lower on some items).

I had been excited though earlier this spring when I originally found the site and ordered last year's catalog. Last year's prices were incredible. But, seeing, as an example: Galanthus Flore Pleno to jump from 24.8 cents each to 41.5 cents each was a bit of a shock. Other increases were similar - everything that I looked at was up 50%. Probably a lot to do with the strength of the EUR right now. Oh well - am definitely looking forward to some fall bulb co-ops and might still supplement with some from this company - we shall see. Might need to split with someone locally - and just get half the quantity I had anticipated, to save on costs.

Sandra - request a Fedco catalog. They should be sending out one for bulbs in June. They're prices are usually pretty good and they have discounts when you buy in quantity. http://www.fedcoseeds.com/index.htm

Sue - good idea. I have a few packets of their seeds that I bought at our local food co-op. I'll order the catalog. Are you bringing catalogs to the RU next month?

Sandra, (love your name & glad I finally fggered it out!)

Could you please a few examples of what you wanted with the price per whatever so I can compare with some othr catalogs I have here?

I will post the comparisons of what you post.

Like some particular crocus (but name), dutch iris, daffs
(I want some mix by the hundreds), and something hycanths armeniacum....

Thanks, Lav
