We have snails (with shells) in our pond. They came here in on plants. Will they live & eat plants on land?
snails
They can't live outside of water and are good to have. They eat algae but won't bother your plants (as far as I know).
Pond snails are a good thing? Now how do I explain th DH that I spend half my time hunting down and destroying snails in the garden but need to get some different ones for the pond?
DH is probably smarter than you think.
What I want to know is how to we get rid of them in the garden. We NEVER had them here before..Now we can join the rest of U snail hunters *LOL* SO FAR I haven't seen any in my mixed up garden but boy Greenwood sure has them in his Hostas.

We use "That's It" by Metro. It may not be available anywhere but here. It is surefire.
I don't think there are any amphibious snails. Could you post a picture of the land ones?
Ulrich,
I think these are just regular old slugs. They are pretty small right.. now not sure if they are grown or babies. They don't have a shell & the ones in the pond does. The slugs we had in VA were very large.
I have had land snails come in on water marginals, and they will eat the plants in your garden. The ones we found were small, about 3/8 inch, with simple tan shells. Water snails stay in the water. We have two kinds, one about 1/2 inch in diameter that has a spiral shell rather like a nautilus, and another with an escargot-type shell. The former just appeared; I bought a few of the latter, and they have reproduced in the pond.
Kneff,
The ones in the pond are small too. I'm not sure of the shell..will have to look. I don't see my pond plants eaten on & have never seen them on land. The ones in the hostas sure do eat on them & no shells.
The only time I have ever found snails in my pond, they were actually stuck in the filter and alive. Don't know if they got in there on their own or got sucked into the pump. Never saw bites out of my pond plants though. Hmmm. A friend at school just gave my daughter what he called 'water snails'. They are happy hanging out in a fish bowl of water with rocks in the bottom. Anybody know what those are? Last week their was a cray fish in there that met with it's demise. Seems my three year old fed him orchid food. ARGH
