Iwonder if you can help me. I have just planted what is supposed to be cotinus coggygria royal purple. However the first new leaves are green not purple. This is a fairly young plant. Do you think this is normal? or do I have the wrong plant.

You 'might' have the wrong plant. All I can say is mine is purple from the time they bud out to the time it drops leaves in fall.

And here's a scan of the plant tag that came with mine...but mine appears more purple than the picture...always has appeared a deep purple. Maybe later in summer is gets more of a greenish tint in the hot sun? I'll have to watch it to see...but I don't recall it turning green at all last year.
