I can't believe this made it. The puppies dug it up about 3 weeks ago. I never pulled it, just kept looking, and shaking my head.
So where am I in the game??? let's see pictures. This is the one I got at the grocery. Note, it isn't coming out the top where it looked like it would, it's coming out the bottom.
malanga revisited
tig,
Is any part of the bulb in the ground?
Looks like it is just laying on top of the ground with no dirt on it at all.
Look, there's John's silk Melanga again! LOL
I kind of like the water droplets for that 'real' effect! Scotchgard? ROTF!
Colie, mine is laying on top of the ground. (I know, I'm lazy, should have picked it up) But I'm glad I didn't. And it's not putting out like John's, mine is definitely coming out the bottom. The sprout is coming out of the ground, some dirt washed over the bottom of the bulb with all this rain and it being in a new bed.
or maybe the 'bad puppy method' ?? sad thing about the pups is that they both got Parvo and aren't here anymore. Good for my garden, but sure sad for my mom.
My first leaf is just trying to come out now. I'm starting my plant on a series of steroid injections just as soon as I can. This new steroid is better known as Roots Rabbit Poop.
tig,
With your green thumb & great soil, you can grow anything.I bet you could even grow telephone poles:)
Oh tiG .. I'm so sorry for your Mom, I found a puppy under my car once with it and my vet could not save it...: (
I thought it was your neighbors dogs that were the trouble makers. My 4 pup's where taught from a very early age that my plant's and digging are a big NO NO ! and they all but the oldest stay by my side as I garden .. If I lost them I'd be a very lonesome gardener.
John
Mom would stand there and watch them dig things up!!! argh. (she lives next door) But I have a chihuahua that can not be away from my side, and he's great. Never digs, barks at snakes.
Colie, I don't know about that, I've lost many many things in the past two years. I can't grow moss rose!!! :( it keeps dying on me. Don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Well here is mine. It wants to grow a leaf, really it does! LOL I think it needs repotted too or put in the ground or something. Nice root system. It has either new roots or more leaves or tubers coming out right about the soil too. Unfortunately it has been cool, rainy and over cast for days. :( This is May, right???
This is not fair, how on earth can I be in last place here?tiG,I'm sure it will bounce back, heck maybe it urged it to grow, mine is still in the nub stage,Nice job on the turtle wax John, that is how you got the water to bead isn't it?LOL!
I must agree...Rootdoctor did start something! I've told a few people about it and now they are looking for the malanga too. I have 4 started. The one I threw outside is doing the best, even after the ducks nibbled on it. The other 3 I have in water in the house (like how you start an avocado)and they are just nubs. I talked to a man who was from Costa Rica and he says they love the heat and lots of water. I think that is why the one outside is doing the best. My next step is to put the ones in water outside and see what they do.
do all of you have yours in the shade??
Mine is in full sun Bonnie. Trying to get it's first leaf.
Michele, it is looking really good. Mine is in the ground and we are very cool now, so it will be slowed down some, I'm sure.
mine is about the same size a badseed's too. Mine is in the ground and in full sun. If my ducks would stop eating it I could post a picture. Who knows maybe this has helped grow!
finally a plant that animals help! LOL!!
OH Mr. Smarty pants! You have a second leaf??? LOL I forgot to post a pic of my leaf. I'll try now but it may be too dark.
I don't have a second leaf, but I do have three growth points. Does that count? I'm hoping that I'll see some green coming along really soon. Have one small leaf, and I do mean small.
WHAT IS THE DEAL HERE!?!?!?!!!I am still in the red bud mode! Dang it John, you are pullin away from the pack!Maybe I need to mulch with Nana leaves?LOL!
or have an animal attack it:) lol!
Looking great Michele. Can't wait to see what a full grown leaf looks like in my garden.
I just had to repot again. I pulled it out of the orange pot and had roots all the way around again. LOL Wondering how big it would get in the ground and if I should go ahead and plant it. I'm hoping it gets huge and now space is at a minimum. Who put all those plants by my pond?!?!?
They sell malangal roots (tubers?) at a store near my work!
Can't you grow it in a large pot Michele? I had some ears in pots last year and they did very well. I didn't know how much better they would have done in the ground, so I was happy. Maybe they wouldn't have done any better.
How much are ya'll paying for these? The ones I saw were 86 cents a pound I believe. I'll weigh one today, but they are pretty big.
I looked at taro root yesterday at WallyWorld and it was $1.89 per pound. That seemed like a lot to me compared to what Root was paying for the Malanga root.
Badseed ! Time for me to start feeding !! I think yours is bigger! I will be on my way up to the Ohio Pottery festival in July .. in Z-ville, Did I ever tell you how much I love Cincinnati ? You will find me in front of the Union Terminal eating Graters strawberry chip ice-cream soaking in one of our country's most beautiful train stations...Then look for me in the Netherland Hotel eating in one of the most beautiful French Deco dinning rooms that I have ever seen! Even in Europe.. Sorry just getting excited to get Ohio this summer : )
Well John Dear, I have not fed mine at all! HA!!! :) Guess I better grab the fish poop soup so I can really put you to shame! giggle Hey, when are you coming?? You will be in Cincinnati? I live about 20 minutes from Union Terminal and I would be thrilled to meet you. Actually I live about one mile from KY and Coney Island (the huge swimming pool/amusement park). I have no pressing summer plans and really would come to meet yoU! Cincinnati is such a neat and bizarre place. I have lived here all my life. Although I long to move South, if I have to stay here, HERE is where I would I would stay.
