Anyone know if this is a Varigated Japanese?

Glory, the bloom sure looks like my green Japanese. Very pretty.

That'd be my guess, Iris enstata 'Variegata' http://www.hirts.com/cgi-local/catalog.cgi?cat=2,13,202,&item=2087

It's hardy too. Even here ;)

I have bought these two different times and they always die. I must be doing something really wrong. I didn`t think they were very hardy. The problem could be they got too much water. Could that be it, they don`t need much water and need to be planted in a dry place.

Busybee, Japanese irises (Iris ensata) prefers a wet soil and will even grow in shallow water. You might have had a variegated Iris pallida... which likes it dry.

Mary,
There is clay under all this pine straw and it hold the water. The iris did die back last winter but came back.
