The Little Brug That Could

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Lookee here Cala!My little Candida Peach that you sent me a couple weeks ago must like it here in KY.The bloom is nearly as big as the plant itself!

I've wanted to post this over the last week, but figured that it might be better to let the new system get on line.

My new little brugs are healthy and happy on my front porch.Looking forward to seeing more blooms.

Wow Mel that's great. So they will bloom in smaller pots?

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

What a pretty flower. It won't be that long before it is big and full of blooms.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Wow Melody, you did good. I noticed that that one can't decide if it wants to be yellow, gold or peach. Hopefully it will settle down soon. I hope you get lots of blooms this summer.

This bloom seems to be on the gold side of peach.I was surprised that it wasn't pinker, but it is extremely attractive. We've had some hot weather while the bud was forming, would that make it more gold?I've got a large wooden planter that holds several pots.I'm going to pot this one up bigger and place it with some lavender and purple foliaged plants.I think it will be stunning.

Melody, that sounds pretty! You will have to take more pictures!
I don't know why this one likes to change colors. It will be peach, then for some odd reason, change to gold then be peach again! Temperature does affect the carotenoids that cause orange/peach, so could be what's doing it. I think brugs are just weird plants as far as color goes!

Melody, that is really something to see such a large bloom on a small plant in a small container. I have CG growing and blooming, 5 open, in a 2 gal. pot. I am always hesitant to move something in bloom. How long do you think it will be okay in a 2 gal. pot. ??, Donna

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I would think it depends on how root bound it is Donna. I have noticed that when I do not move my brugs up they just stop growing. I have had ones in 4 inch pots that I did not move up for 1 year and then when I did they rush in growth. It is amazing! I have some now in 2 gallon cans that have just stopped growing so I figure I need to move them up. Fertilizer does not seem to help very much if they are too rootbound. Though I did read a post awhile back, maybe from Agapanthus that said Daturapod said they did great for him in tiny pots as long as he kept fertilizing them.

Susie is doing experiments where she is getting seedlings to flower in 4 inch pots. What a great thing that would be for us with lots of seeds and no land.........LOL!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Yes, but you would have to rig up automatic watering for those 4 inch pots or you would be standing outside 24/7 with a watering hose in your hand. I'm sure Susie has the ideal situation going with your greenhouse and her know how. I'll be anxious to hear how it goes.
