Passiflora repotting problem

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

I have a new passiflora in a 2.5" pot. I need to move it into a larger pot. Here is my dilemma. It is obviously going to want to have a support of some sort. If I now put it in let's say a 4" pot with a small trellis, in no time it will need to go into a 6" pot and so on. No problem as far as repotting, but what to do with the trellis that it will be adherred to? Can I just put the little sucker in a 10" pot with a sizeable trellis? I know that it will then mainly produce roots...HELP!

I move mine from those little pots directly into the pot for summer growing. Have never had any trouble.

Since Brugie posted that it's ok..........LOL.........I guess I can say that I do that too :)
I didn't want to post to go ahead and do it and have someone say that that's "wrong"........LOL

Hey Susan, I'm sure not a pro at passifloras, but I've done this for several years and never had a problem. I do wait for the weather to warm some before I put them out though and this year, I'm sure glad I did or they would be shredded.

Mine go from the Logee's tiny pots into the ground with no problems...and I have not killed one yet : ) the big problem is controlling the growth : )

yeah, I had mine in the house too and am glad that the hail wasn't really bad and only lasted about a minute. It would have hurt to run out there in the hail to bring them in. Do you feed yours anything besides miracle grow? I saw one at the garden center today and the leaves must have measured 6" easy and the bud on that thing was about 1-2" in diameter and about 5" long..........I'd never seen one that big.......mine aren't that big :(

Generally I give them a product similar to Miracle Grow. It's called Peters and is a 20-20-20 blend. Once in a while, maybe once a month, I'll give them a bloom booster. My P. Belotti has huge leaves on it too, but I over fed it in the house and burned the tips of the leaves. From a distance, it almost looks variegated, and I'm sure not going to tell anyone who visits. LOL!!

I didn't feed mine while in the house but the tips of my leaves burnt too and looked variegated from a distance........LOL. Did it when I put it outside but those leaves are gone now and it's getting lots of new growth.

Wish I could blame it on taking it outside, but I mixed up some fertilizer for the brugs and without thinking gave the P. a good dose too. Didn't take long for it to scream at me. It will be fine, but sometimes I wonder why I do such stupid things.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Oh we all do stupid things like that..........LOL

How much do you all prune your passifloras? I just learned that only new growth blooms. Some of the almost "wild" ones I'd like to just cut down to the ground. The older leaves are very ratty looking! They are growing up an old oak tree.

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

hmmmmmmmm..........I just have been cutting the dead stuff off that doesn't grow anymore, other than that, I've left the rest alone. What do some of you other's out there do?
Brugie?

Gilmer, TX

The one I had planted outside died down so I cut the dead stuff off. It is almost as tall as it was last year already. The ones in the GH I just left alone. Hate to hear they only bloom on new growth. Next year I will give them a haircut. All look fine to me. Planning on putting a couple more in the ground this year.

I didn't know that.I have one thats 3 years old and NEVER bloomed and its huge...its getting a hair cut

Dale,

With the growing season in FL, I would skip the 4" and 6" pots unless you want to transplant again in Aug. Put them in 8"-10" pots, and use bamboo sticks as trellis. Either stick one or three bamboos per pot, and tie them together at the top to form a teepee. You can get the bamboo sticks at Lowes, Frank's, Home Depot, etc.

I have a better pic somewhere in the DB, but this is the best I found. http://davesgarden.com/fp.php?pid=8967

Thanks All. I don't have to buy bamboo, Tim...I just cut down a huge stand and have plenty of it! Anyone need a fishing pole??? As you can tell, I still have my trepidations about pruning. When Tim told me about only blooming on new growth I got braver though! Is the only way to get them bushier at the bottom is to prune?

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Tim, I loved that Sunburst passiflora. Never saw that color before. I have 3 but all are still in pots and in the greenhouse or shadehous. Can't depend on this weather yet to put outside. I didnt' know either that they only bloom on new growth. mine are new enough so that shouldn't be a problem. One is in bloom, a really pretty lavender. Donna
