This is my first attempt at growing daturas and brugs..
the datura is a single purple.. it was there,, plant only about a foot tall, and then it just died,, the flower not the plant.. what did I do wrong??
and now I will go out and seperate the brugs and daturas since I just learned from you all.
from the datura seeds, did real good with babies.. not as many brugs came up.. thanks for advice really need it.. Bon
flowers there but didnt open
Bon, it could be several things.....maybe bugs, maybe the cold temps we have at times in Iowa, and how about the winds? They have been horrible lately. Don't worry, you are probably doing everything all right. It just happens sometimes. I'm sure when you are out there sweating to remove all the seed pods from the datura, you will not be unhappy if a few of the flowers don't make it.
If its the short ,light lavender one I thought the same thing...
then I figured out it only opened late in the day and only lasted that day so I kept missing it....
LOL CC.....that must be happening to the little one I just bought at the farmers' market. It is inside and has lots of buds but i never see it open.............
The seed pods..Do I remove them now?? they are little.. will it help the plant??
and thanks so much.. Brugie there in the greenhouse still.so are the brugs.. should they be outside now??
and I bet you are right about opening at night!!!! I'm not out there then.. those sneaky little things!!thanks for advice and encouragement.. I sure hope they grow and have those pretty angel trumpets Ive read so much about and those beautiful pictures!!! I just am so anxious for it..
Oh My! I do believe we have another burgaholic in the making!!
Bon, I've had my brugs outside for about a month now. I'm sure they were growing faster in the greenhouse, but I ran out of room and somthing had to be kicked out. We are plenty warm for them to be outside now. Have fun. I've still got about 5 more to plant and I'll be done. That will make about 75 of them. I gave up and did give a lot more away. Ran out of room and steam.
Shirley, I don't know how you do all that you do. 75 . .WOW Your yard will be beautiful and I sure hope to see a picture of it. I am glad that you only have 5 left so that you can sit back a little and watch it grow and bloom.
Frannie, then I will have to start on the passiflora, and other tropicals still in the house. I figure I'll be done before the snow flies. LOL
Bon are you sure that your daturas didn't open they are nite bloomers I have a few but sometimes never see them bloom for Im in bed I have a dr suess hybrid that has buds on it that are not opening too I just cut the bottom of the bud to see if it will open I think its the heat down here in florida don't know if its hot enought up north for that problem
Daturas are very prone to root rot. The pot or flower bed needs a good drainage. The plants do better when watered and fed less.
Your right they bloom at night.. but there so small.. waiting for the 4 inchers.. they do smell good just have to get real close.. I planted 9 daturas outside now.. Ithink there all the same the small single purple ones.. and I planted the brugs that Mavie sent me last fall. only 2 survived and I wasn't sure if I should put them in the ground,, but I decided to be brave and did it.. will they bloom this year.. they get tall right?? and I think I might becoming addicted.. I want all the colors and the big flowers.. and your pictures are sooooo pretty.. Iwould love to be able to grow that.. !!!! thanks.. bon
You should have bloom this year. This fall I can help you out with some brug cuttings. Maybe before even. Keep in touch. Wish you had come to the Roundup. Had brugs here to give away. Be sure to fertilize them a lot and watch for mites and other leaf eating critters.
You all won't believe this!!! We had a graduation party for my daughter on Saturday, and the friday before the mailman came up (and hes really nice and interested in the plants I get from co ops and stuff) and wanted to see some things. I pointed out the Daturas and he said gee those are weeds. jimsing (I think thats the right spelling). and at the party I asked lots of the guys that farm, and my husband, who just gets a kick out of all the flowers and wasn't even thinking weed. and they all agreed and said it was a weed!!! I grew these from SEED!! I was really upset, but that didn't help anything. and the seedpod was ready to burst so I took it off and set it aside, then pulled them out of my garden and put them in a hole where no one would see them. DO YOU BELIEVE THIS!!! did you ever hear of anything like this! theres a few more in the greenhouse, and I hope there the real thing..You know-- I've given away a whole bunch of these... and if there WEEDS-- oh boy.
Bon, I grow them. I believe what we are growing are not the same thing, but a close relative. Let's face it...I'll bet those guys have never seen a double purple, cream, yellow, or dbl. white one in their fields. I'm sure Tonny or Ludger can tell you which one is considered a weed here. I do know that my D. Wrightii Regal has re-seeded something awful. I've got to get better about removing the seed pods and not letting them dry and burst while on the plant.
thanks for the encouragement.. I know they think I'm quite a nut.. unfortunatly they are the single purple.I don't have any of the doubles. I ordered one from michigan gardens and I don't know where it went.. I know I planted it outside and now I cant find it anywhere.. this last week has been a dousy.. so busy dont know where my head is!! thanks again for responses.. Bon
