What is a "secret" plant trade? How does it work?

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

Louisa, not very hard.........you get a name sent to you and you send them plants (from their wish list if they have one, or something that would grow in their zone) and you get plants from a secret person that you won't know until you get plants in the mail :)

Mcallen, TX(Zone 8a)

It is sorta like a "secret pal" or "secret santa" thing, but better since it is PLANTS!!!!!

Now, could some of you who have done this before please tell us what you have given or received so we newbies can have an idea of what to do?

Thanks, Lav

Newark, OH(Zone 5a)

I've done the "secret santa" and the "secret snack trade before" but have never done the "secret plant" one myself either :)
I've heard from others though and it's basically whatever you feel worth sharing. Plants, bulbs (they're acceptable too? right?), some people put other little suprises in them too that aren't plants. Just whatever you want to send along.

Am I right here? Someone back me up.........LOL

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

Yes, You're correct. I've been extremely happy with the two I've been in. You go in without expecting anything in particular and you end up with a box of wonderful plants! It's fun and no one critizes or is unhappy with their box as far as I can tell from the previous forums for the secret trades. I have received plants that I love and have not seen offered at the local nurseries, so I wouldn't know or love them if I hadn't participated. Try it! YOu'll like it! LOU

Fort Edward, NY(Zone 5a)

Austell, GA(Zone 7a)

Brazil, IN(Zone 5a)

Count me in if it's ok, can I pick stuff up from the nursuries if I don't have something the person I get wants? Is this exceptable or bad form? Limited as a newbie on what I have to send. sent e-mail info. Tracy Someone let me know how to package plants just read on one of the forums your not supposed to send the dirt? Confused how do you send plants? I don't want whoever I get to be disappointed!

hillbilliebo, it is allowed to pick up something new to send. Often, hosta people will do this for a secret trade, get something nice with enough 'eyes' to divide and share. If you look around, you might have more than you realize! I have Ajuga running rampant, and forget there are people who might want some!

And that's right, don't send soil. Usually, the best method is to rinse all the soil off the roots. Wrap the roots in a paper towel and dampen. Then cover the roots (only!) and all the paper towel with plastic (wrap or a bag). Fasten together with an elastic or rubber band. Do not forget to label! Many people have those mini-blinds they use as markers, these can be rubber-banded to the plant. Then, roll the whole plant in newspaper (like a cone). It goes into a Priority Mail Box (free at Post Office).

Put in your davesgarden name so your trader can thank you!!!

Hope this helps, and enjoy trading!

Okay, I'm in. I have never participated in one of these either, but I'm ready to try it out.

I'm wondering though, how are the zone differences handled? I know that most of the plants that I have would hate it in the South, and any plants that love the south will most definitely hate it here.

Belvidere, IL(Zone 5a)

Love to join

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

Joan, last year I tried to keep zones alike when matching people up, but it's very hard to do. If you get someone who's zone is very very different from yours, use the PDB to help.

Villa Rica, GA(Zone 7a)

I guess I better join in if John is in on it!

These are such fun! And thanks, MOLLYBEE. John
