Did something dumb........need facts, please

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

While pruning my brugs last night, I inadvertently got a drop of brug "blood" squirted in my eye. Now the pupil in that eye is dilated, like when you go to the eye dr. and he puts drops in........... Ok, it was dumb. more than dumb........All right, it was stupid.......... I need facts on this, not horror stories, etc. I have done enough "stupid-ing" to myself since last night. My eye did get washed out in the shower a little later. I did not rub said eye. (at least I don't remember doing so consciously). Do I really, really need to go to the dr. or can I get something OTC to put in, or will it just take a day or so to get itself back to normal? No pain associated with it. If I absolutley HAVE to go to the dr. what do I tell him? I'm sure they know NOTHING about brugs and what ingested parts of the plants do. But, I didn't ingest, so to speak. Oh, well, any help any of you can be will be appreciated. TIA

The same thing happened to Calla a few years ago....can't remember if she went to the doctor.....

You can do a google search on the SOLANACEAE family chemicals to take to your DR if that is the route you choose to go.
The chemical properties in the Solanaceae family work as muscle relaxants. This is what is causing your pupil to dilate and I suspect it will right itself once the effect of the splash/drop from the Brug wears off.

RA49. thank you for that info. It is alot better this aft, tho still dilated some. At least I know what is causing it and it isn't terminal! :>)

Poor you! Let us know how you fare! I have heard you should wear sunglasses when you prune brugs.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I kinda did this my self I got it on my hands then rubed my eye Its JMO that it will go away on it own might take a little while if it doesn't hurt and its not swollen I wouldn't think that you need a doctor

The first time it happened(yes, I did it twice, don't ask how, lol)I went to the eye doctor and he washed it out with saline stuff. He said it would just have to wear off and to watch for redness that lasts more than one day. It took about 24 hours to wear off. Now when I'm pruning brugs that are over my head, I wear safety glasses(thanks Tracey) Oh, and wear sunglasses when you are out in bright light because light irritates your eyes when they are dialated.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

My eye never did get red. And yes, I knew enough to wear sunglasses when I was outside. Couldn't hardly stand any outside light at all till late in the day. It's almost back to normal now, so I won't worry. If just a drop of 2 of this brug "blood" can do this to your eye, I can only imagine what it does for somebody that thinks they are going to get a "high" off it. Thanks for the information. I didn't think I really needed to go the Dr. route, as long as I wasn't in pain and the eye looked basically normal, no redness, swelling, etc.

I can remember Sanders posting a picture somewhere last year of his eyes when this happened, he said he just looked odd for a bit then was OK without doing anything. Wore sunglasses.

Happened to me a few years ago also, the doctor thought is was hilarious, knowing what a plant nerd I am. It was gone in less than 48 hours. I was concerned I had a concussions of the brain, my friend who was training to become a paramedic suggested I hit my head.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

It happens to me several times in a year. Its the atropin in the fluid. Atropin is used by the eye docotors for examinations. The latter is much more uncomfortable as from the drop of the plant fluid, at least to me.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Monika, I agree, the atropine is much worse from the doctor than from getting plant juice in one's eye.
Dennis, I had the same thing happen. A friend saw my eye when I went to the school to pick up my daughter. She called the paramedics, she was convinced I'd had a stroke! I finally convinced the paramedic that I had NOT had a stroke and that it was possible for juice from a plant to do that to one's eye!

Rich calls it Brug eye! LOL...Calla...did you do it to the same eye twice?

Glad to hear you are doing okay now. Must be miserable dealing with this condition.

It is Tuesday evening and 48 hours since the "episode". My pupil is still dilated a little, but nothing like it was 2 days ago. Guess I'll live and be able to see! Thanks for all the info.
