looks like another pineapple to me :)
I can't believe you're growing pineapple in NY. I'm so jealous. How did you manage that?

CC, that is a pup... let the pineapple ripen on the plant.. after you harvest let the mother plant go until she starts to die back.. Then pull her out of the soil and strip the leaves from the bottom up .. when you get to a pup it will already have roots on it !!... Hey we need to have a upside down pineapple cake bake off !!! : )

man, you have all kinds of them growing.........I'm really jealous now!!

John, how do you start your pineapple. I've been wanting to try again. My first one rotted.

Shirley

Brugie, It's realy simple... buy a nice ripe one if you can : ) cut the top off leaving an inch or two of the fruit on, then scoop all the fruit off around the center core .. Place it in a cool dry place for a week or two to dry, some of the bottom leaves that have yellowed should be pulled then just plant in a well draining potting soil and slowly increase the light and water ... This method has always worked for me .

Thanks John. I was getting hungry for pineapple too, so this will server two purposes. Someone had told me a long time ago, to twist the top out of the pineapple and I was afraid to do that. Will use your method.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

John,I can't believe you have a pineapple field!!!!!

here I am sooo happy with my 2 plants....

Flow,I have the one in the picture growing in the GH,hoping to have NY Nanas in there next winter...LOL

Shirley,I have one that I started the way John said, but it started to not look so good.....it stopped growing....and sent up a brand new shoot from the side....growing well now......

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)

I have tryed once but it faild.....there came pretty mucj mould...

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I think the biggest problem is that most people don't let it dry out before potting it up,and you have to be sure to get all the fruit off....try it again, make sure you follow the directions John gave.......

Lappeenranta, Finland(Zone 3a)

thank you John and crestedchik, I will try it again.

Looks like another one coming to me. We grow them here in MD also. this is mine from last year, when we harvested it, I started another one from the top and it is doing fine outside now.
They are both out in the garden now next to the Musa African Red, after all what is a pineapple without a banana LOL!
Like everyone says, make sure all the fruit is removed and then peel off lots of lower leaves and you see little roots. I let mine dry out for 2 days and then pot them in a mix of potting soil and orchid mix (equal amounts)

haighr, I like the recipes in your link much better than pineapple upside down cake!

LOL, they are pretty good mixes for pineapple. Cake, who wants cake?

Orlando, FL(Zone 9b)

I'm giving this a try right now, though I didn't quite do it as described above. One pineapple rooted just fine--I only pulled off a few of the bottom leaves and left the fruit on it, placing it in sterile potting soil. I didn't wait for it to dry out really--just a couple of hours. The second one, I left sitting out for several days to "dry." It was starting to drop its leaves. I put it in some water--with some of the fruit top still attached--for a couple of days and then put it into sterile potting soil. I think it's starting to take root now after about two weeks or so. The first one is looking pretty good after about 6 weeks--nice and green, getting new leaves. I'll have to put them in a larger pot soon.

I have to bring this up.. I just bought the very ripe pineapple and I cut the top off with 1 inch fruit on. I would like to try to grow this. I hope I get good luck.. Can I plant it in pot or in ground? What size of pot I should use?

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I saw a show on TV,where they twisted the top off,I tried it and it exposed what looked like the start of roots,so I will not cut them anymore.

Waterford, ON(Zone 6a)

I've had a pineapple growing for a little over a year now, it is growing, but no fruit. Do you have to do something special to get it to fruit?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I was really impressed when I saw Haighr's. I couldn't believe you could buy them like that. LOL The other day at work, we got a box of plants in and believe it or not...pineapple plants with softball size pineapples! I was SO tempted then I remembered all the brugs and ears I have to overwinter. ack.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

But it's food seed, you gotta look at it like that!LOL!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Generally I don't grow my food in the house all winter. ;) With all the brugs and ears I have, the kids will be lucky to have a home for the winter. giggle

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Sounds like I need to start a plant babysitting company!LOL!!!

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I have my pineapples planted in a mix of potting soil and orchid mix, gives them good air circulation and drainage. The mature pineapple only bears fruit every other year so just be patient. I started my second plant from the top of the original plant from which I harvested the pineapple. I cut off the top, let it dry about 2 days, stripped several of the bottom layers of leaves and potted in the soil mix. It has grown tremendously since. Sorry you are running out of space there badseed, I know the feeling. Every time I go out and look at the isle, I wonder where am I gonna put 2 huge pineapple, about 6 musa and an orange tree, let alone the star jasmine! Yikes, better get another room built quick!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

UPDATE
The pineapple was doing great till my peacocks found it....they left us 1/2 of it.........

it was good, and I have started the top for another plant......

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

I start mine in moist sand.I let it dry about a week(actually forgot about it)then twisted it in the sand about 2inches and left it. It had roots on it about 8 or 10 inches long when I lifted it out and potted it in potting soil.

Crestedchick, Last year one of mine made a really large pineapple and when it started to turn yellow I kept saying I will wait just one more day. Our rooster ate it. He could get out of pen and would get behind the water trough when we tried to catch him to clip his wings. He didn`t even leave any of it.I think we have stopped that problem. BTW, can a chicken smell?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Ya know,I just don't know,I think they taste everything instead of smelling.......

I grew my first pineapple in a 5 gal. bucket. Now I have about 30 growing in my own growth containers. (My g-container are like Earthboxes--but much larger.) Generally I have no problem with 3 plants in one growth container of the size 20 inches wide by 15 inches deep by 36 inches long. Remember now these are growth containers and not just a container.

As far as pups on the base of the fruit go it is nothing for me to have at least six of them, and still no lost to the quality of the fruit.

I attribute this to the manner in which I grow them. First I'm organic. Next I mix my own soiless mixture. I add what I believe is enough organic food to this mixture to last a two year growing cycle of the pineaplle. Next I add one half ounce of fish extraction to every gallon of water I add to the water reservoir of the growth containers. Next twice per month I spray the foliage with one ounce of seaweed extract per gallon applied. I also fill the center of the plant's foliage up with seaweed extract as well.

I can tell you this. Even the skin of my Pineapples are chewed before it finds it way into my composter.

When I found this back in May, I was already underway. I have 3 pineapple plants happily growing on the back porch now. It's time to repot or plant the plants as they have definitely outgrown their current containers and have lots of new growth on them.

Any recommendations on types of fertilizers and feeding schedules for pineapples? I prefer organic methods and, sorry Olds, but I don't do fish anything--stinks too much! Suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I just pot mine in a combo of potting soil and orchid mix and occasionally I give them a bit of Miracle Gro.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I twist the top off and put them in the ground.

Crested Chick,
Check out this site page:

My DH grew up on Molokai. His dad drove the pig pickers in the pineapple fields. My DH picked pineapples in the summer. You have the right idea planting the pups!
