Anyone have water hyacinths to trade?

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

I really need some water hyacinths. I have the following perennials to trade (or would be happy to pay postage):

Variegated petasites
Fallopia Japonica Variegata
Red(or hot pink) Painted daisy
Miscanthus sinensis"Morning Light"
Astilbe
Bergenia
Sedum "Alboroseum Mediovariegatum"
Sedum "Frosty morn"
Lysimachia ciliata"firecracker"
Red Beebalm
Yarrow"the pearl"

Or, please let me know if you are looking for something, I might have it. Thanks, for your consideration.......Dee

Dee, I am just wondering if you can buy them there and what they cost? I'd like to get some lettuces and hyacinths but around here they are $4.50 per plant. I guess that is not a lot when you figure they will fill in a whole pond in a season. What about where you are? If you can't find any, I can get you some, but have to buy them at the above price. I am always curious about different places and what they charge for plants. :)

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

Yes, you can buy them here, but the only nursery that I know of that has them is about 35 miles away, and charge about the same price, as in your area.I really hate paying that much when I'm digging out quite a few plants anyway(and replacing with shrubs) My pond is 11x17, and I was hoping to trade for quite a few, to get some quick coverage.ö¿ö

If I can tag on to Dee's post, I'd love to find some too. I got some Water Lettuce from our favorite "Crazy Cajun" (y'all know who I mean, right? *grin*), and I'd love to get a box of Water Hyacinths. They're $3-$4 each here, and for $4-$5 in postage, I can beg (I hope) a one-pound box with several plants.

So.....does anybody down south wanna go wading for a few hyacinths? I'd be glad to work out trade, or I can send you postage - either way works for me.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

me too...I just need a few for my veggie filter.....

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

me too, no one around here has any. I thought I'd find some at some nursery, but no....

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I am going to call and check the water nursery where I got the Lotus. I know they were $4.50 last year. I can always ask for a bulk price if anyone is interested. Never hurts to ask. LOL

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

ask!! LOL!

MD &, VA(Zone 7b)

I want some too. The nursery here has teeny tiny baby ones for $3 each.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Last year their's were mostly about 4" across. I'll call and see if they have them or when they will order. My veggie filter is in but now I find I HAVE to have a bigger pump. Argh.

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

I'll sure be glad when the PDB is back on line so I can check out more info on all these plants! Ponding is a whole new aspect of gardening and I an eager to learn more!

Do Hyacynths bloom? and if so what colors? If I add duckweed for fast surface coverage will I be able to eliminate it later or is it so rampant you can't get rid if it?

So many questions! So much to learn!

Here ya go Zany! http://www.iisgcp.org/EXOTICSP/waterlettuce.htm
Okay, talked to 'my guy'. He says the best he can do is $3 if I order 24, give or take. He also said they are in slim supply this year. Apparently it has been too cool and even the greenhouses are not doing well with them. :( And he said they are smaller this year then normal. You guys let me know if you want them or not. If you can get them where you are and skip the shipping you would be better off. On a good note they are practically weightless and spread pretty darn fast once it is warm in the water. Oh, I can go look at them first if you want. He has the rosette ones as well (kind of pleated/wrinkled).

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Pictures of both types are here: http://www.floridadriftwood.com/aquarium_plant_water_lettuce.htm

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Are water Lettuce and hyacynths the same thing?

I found a place that shows duckweed and there are the small invasive one and a larger leaved one that is supposedly easier to control. The smaller one is what I was hopeing to use for fast coverage until I can get other things in there but am afraid it may be too hard to get rid of or control in my wee little pond

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

no, not the same. Seed, does he have hyacinths?

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

For Zany :) http://homepage.westmont.edu/u/outside/phil.soderman/www/
Yep tiG, already asked! LOL He has water hyacinths too. He did say I would have to be careful about WHERE I mailed both of them. ;)

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I don't want lettuce, but would like prices on hyacinths.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I think I am the victim of cerebral flatulence! LOL Just noticed this post is hyacinths and not lettuce! I oughta be shot. Must be the ill effects of too much rain, too much cold and now a sunny day, working by the pond, after being up all night cuz I had to work. *Gee* Who wants to smack me first? By the way tiG, the water lily you sent me is going to town!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Okay I called back. Same price on hyacinths. If there is enough interest, I will get off of Dee's post and start a co-op post. He grows the lotus and lilies himself and who knows what else (water canna, marginal canna, cattails, parrots feather, cyperus, etc.)! You oughta see the assortment! The lettuce and hyacinths are ordered weekly and he said he is getting about 500 in next week, only got 250 this week.

Weatherford, TX(Zone 7b)

I was told you cant buy them in Texas.Anyone know about that?

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL! I was getting confused. But I managed to read up on the two so at least now I know which is which and that the water lettuce doesn't have the lovely flowers of the hyacinths.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Sorry Zany. *blush* I was running in and out, trying to keep the kids happy, making phone calls and trying to replant a bunch of plants I dug up. LOL

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I know they are illegal in FL and I believe also in TX. not certain about TX, but that would be why you can't buy them. They clog the waterways if they are released into the wild.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I got an email from a DG friend that said to check www.waterplants.com. He said you can get them for 1.25 per plant. I plan on checking and thought some of you might like to as well. :)

Ladoga, IN(Zone 6a)

I haven't checked in a few days. Thanks, for all the trouble that you are going to badseed, but I have found some.....

Summerville, SC(Zone 8b)

I just received my water lettuce and water hycianth from
http://www.ewaterlily.com/cgi-bin/shop/cart.pl?db=data.file&category=FLOATING+and+OXYGENATORS
today and they are only $1.25 each. You might want to
consider them. They shipped all the way to SC and included a Kool Pack. You only need one because they will multiply.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

yikes, they want 8.50 to ship though! and you know it doesn't cost more than a pound.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8b)

I know in SC we are not supposed to have them because they spread so much...but my mom as well as everyone in our family has never released any of our lettuce or hycianth into the wild....if we have too much, they are used as mulch under our roses. Since using them to mulch the roses, we never have the dreaded black leaf shot. What a savings for us.

Stephanie

Summerville, SC(Zone 8b)

ok, that was black leaf spot...we have to spray about every two weeks in SC for all the fungus and nasty stuff we get from living in such a humid area.

Kentwood, LA(Zone 8b)

I have some water hycinthes that wintered over and multiplied so I have mostly babies. I can share some of them.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

if you have enough, I'd love to get just two or three. lmk

You are correct. They are illegal in Texas. If you get caught with them even on private property they will confiscate them and fine you. Don't mess with Texas!:) They do clog the water ways but they are beautiful to look at.

Summerville, SC(Zone 8b)

My water hycianth is making a baby or two now, the water lettuce is not looking as good. I placed in one of the ponds in the back of our property which has more shade..they do not like lots and lots of sun. That is the Water Lettuce.

So, perhaps I will have some to trade soon. We have a wholesale nursery that sells them here too...but I would haved to order $100.00 worth. They are $2.50 each there.

I think as we go toward the end of June, they will pick up their growth. I know by the 1st of September, I am constantly picking them out of the ponds and putting under the roses and into our compost pile. I am always grateful
for their abundance. And I do sell to states that can have them all summer.

You might want to check eBay also in the water plants section...there is one man and he is a good seller...starts most of his water plants at $0.99 and you may be able to get a great buy there.

Have A Great Weekend!
