Tulip 'Princess Irene'

Castelnau RB Pyrenée, France(Zone 8a)

This is one of my favourite cultivar tulips. It's bright but subtle at the same time - something I love the Parrot Tulip 'The Artist' for as well, though I'm not sure if mine of those are surviving this year

As the flower matures the green diminishes and the flower has wonderful violet flaming on the orange

This year I planted a large pot of them mixed with Allium 'Purple Sensation' hoping they would flower together.
The alliums are still only in bud, so I'll have to see if the tulips hang on long enough to give a joint show or not

I love this one, too, but I've lost her again. I guess it's probably the fact that I made her associate with all those Johnny-jump-ups ( Viola tricolor ). they can be so common, but really made the violet on the edges jump!

Oh, wow, Philomel, this is my favorite tulip. "Great minds think alike" LOL I plant this with the Jolly Joker Pansy which is very similar coloring to the Princess Irene tulip; orange and purple. Good taste,Kathleen. It is rather odd how we are attracted to some of the various plants/colors. I have such a partiality to orange and blue together. I have planted pots of osteospermum Orange symphony with the anagallis monelli(the blue pimpernel, a vivid blue and vivid orange.) This would be an interesting thread to start discussing various combinations of colors and plants in containers or in the landscape.

What a pretty tulip. I just love it. I planted few tulip pots this year but they did not put on a grand show at all. They were precooled but still fell flat.

Great idea Lenjo! Though I seem to to just put what ever I have together, the brighter the colors the better. Sometimes I even like things that clash together. It really makes you notice the flowers.

Well, Kell, you seem to be the master of pretty plants in very interesting containers. I am still hunting for a chair.

Don't you have outside antique fairs? you can ususally get an old one cheaply! Esp without a seat. Try to get one with an interesting back. I have so many. Every time I go to an antique show I find one or 2! My husband has forbidden me to bring anymore in..........LOL!

At one time my whole front garden was exclusively blue and yellow (apart from the green leaves of course lol)

I'm veering away from being strict with it now, but I love yellow/blue combinations and purple/orange. Very zingy :)

Not so adventurous as you two when it comes to containers though by the sound of it. Tend to stick to glazed or terracotta pots - oh and an old china sink covered with hypertufa

Kell, we don't have those antique fairs you speak of unless Portland has more than I am aware of but I just don't get up there. It is pretty rural here. I did see a couple of vanity chairs at a shop but the back was too low. They had cute medal scrolly work on the back but the plant would hide that back very quickly, so what would be the point?
Philomel, I saw a pansy at a sale last week that was a blue and yellow combination that was pretty stunning, I wish I could recall the name. Blue and yellow is indeed a great combination too. Like a coreopsis zagreb and a blue catmint.
