Water Feature Project questions....

Albany, MO(Zone 5a)

I was lucky enough to find a very old cauldron. It's three foot in diameter and probably three foot tall. Unfortunately it has a single hole in the very bottom. It's made of iron...someone said *pig iron*, whatever that might be. Anyway,,I want to make a water feature out of it, and I know I must protect the iron, although it doesn't seem to rust; and I must do something with the hole. Any ideas on how to prepare this cauldron? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Are you sure it is iron? Iron will rust almost so fast you can watch it happen. But wrought iron fences and such can last for ages with proper care...I think they paint it but an not sure what type of paint they use...rustoleum? As for the hole, you could have it patched by a welder but that could be costly. Maybe use a liner in it instead?

It sounds really neat so I hope you will be able to post pics when you get it figured out.

I'm not sure what kind of iron it is. It weighs so much it took 4 guys to put it in place and has been outside all its life I suppose. I think they used to make soap in them in the *olden days*. If it'd ever stop raining I'd take a photo....lol

Here's a brief description of pig iron: http://science.howstuffworks.com/iron3.htm

I would recommend lining it with flexible pond lining or finding a plastic/rubber liner that would fit snugly within the pot. The outside should be protected by paint, as it will rust :o) Sounds pretty cool!!!!
