I think it is called Purple Majesty Millet.
I saw some plants at Lowe's and was not very impressed with the plant. I sure hope it does better than there's. My seeds are already planted that I purchased this year.

Hi Windy:
Thanks for the reply.
As yet , we don't have a Lowe's here. Soon to come.
I'll check out Home Depot.

Let me know how yours turn out.

I don't really care what the plant looks like(strange right?)
I have a great deal of birds flying over a lot of migrating song birds they love millett, niger.

I think this is a good plant then for your purposes as there were a lot of seed bare plants there. Inside the garden greenhouse they have oodles of birds making nests and I believe they picked the seed stalks clean!
I grow a wild sunflower that is a perennial called maximillan. You can get seeds for this plant at the wildflower sites on line. It is a tall plant that blooms very late in the season. Every year since I have grown it, the finches pick it clean.
Luckily, this plant is a perennial and also propagates by underground runners as well as seeds.
Good luck with those birds, they are a lot of fun to watch.

Sandy, I still have extra purple majesty millet seeds if you are interested. They are left over from the co-op. Send me an email if your interested. It's .49 cents for shipping and .24 or .25 cents for the bubble wrap. Then, .14 cents per seed which was a great deal!

They sprout quickly ~ two or three days!

so Summer (Sandy?) do you really want thistle seed, or was it the millet you meant?

I keep driving by the purple thistles, and thnking I need to find out if you want me to collect some.

They are starting to go to seed now.

Guess I'm confused, still, 'bout the purple majesty millet vs. the thistle. The thistle sounds very cool, but I'm not sure I know how it's different than the millet?

Mcallen, TX(Zone 8a)

They are two totally different plants, but the way the queston was originaly presented, not sure which one she means of the two plant:

Purple Millet or Purple Thistle.

I checked the database and Purple Thistle is quite invasive here and grows wild. I can get you plenty of seeds soon. Wouldn't it be hard to work with though, with all those thorny leaves?

I'm wondering if this purple Thistle yall are talking about is a noxious weed here in Missouri. Farmers get fined if they don't cut the flower heads off before they go to seed. It does have a strange but beautiful purple flower, a nasty plant with lots of stickers. Worse spreeder than dandylion. I hope this isn't what you guys are talking about!!

I found a pic on Google,, See all the little thorns/stickers? I wouldn't want this anywhere on my property. It breeds like an aphid!! This photo is not mine, but found on search.
