We have to leave for about 10 days starting Wed. I hope it will rain some but if it doesn't what can I do to help not lose my plants? The man next door is suppose to water them but I doubt he will. His wife usually cares for them but she can't walk right now with a badly broken ankle..she is confined to a wheel chair. I have water crystals in the dirt but not sure how much help that will be. I don't want to lose my babies. I thought about placing them in a under the bed storage container with holes drilled in the side so in case it rains they won't flood. Is that worse than no water & hoping for rain? Some of the brugs are in the ground & if he will just turn the cutoff on they should be OK.
Sugar
caring for brugs when away
Can you put them in shadow? Small brugs in small pots you can dig in dirt and cover the pots with dirt. Water them before leaving it should work for 10 days.
Larger pots with larger brugs: Put a large bucket filled with water beside the brugpot..must have the same level, bucket should better be some higher as the brugpot. Take a woolthread and put one end into the waterbucket and the other end into the brugpoot. The woolthread will soack some water from bucket to brugpot. The woolthread MUST BE!! wet before you start it.Large pots will need more than one woolthread...
Best would be to put the bucket on a box to be a little higher than the brugpot.
I am also leaving for a week right now, I put all the small pots in trays with water. So far I haven't had root rot, may be lucky, but the alternative is certain death- in a hot greenhouse.
Sugar has questioned a real important question.
Most important for all plantlovers.
Ludger, You are so right , and also have some great ideas for watering when on holiday or away.
Sugar_fl, If you have time to go to one of the big home improvement centers.. They sell a water timer that hooks to a main faucet.. you then could place your potted brugs by your planted one's and have a sprinkler go off whenever and for how ever long you would like. But if there is no time for that Ludger's and Dennis_taylor's idea's are great. Woolthread is just what we call pure wool yarn so do not let ludger's good suggestions make you think where in the world can I get woolthread : )
John
I've heard of using shoe laces for that too.....
we have a wool blanket that we don't use & threaten to throw out.. wonder if we can cut a THIN strip & use it.. will try tomorrow as we don't have time for timers. There is just so much to do in the 2 days we have. I don't have any wool thread..(yarn)
wicking will work great Sugar!! have a great vacation.
I read elsewhere if U use fertilizer the water crystals will do as much harm as Good. Said they won't release the water.. anyone have any experience on that? Too late now if that is true as I already put it in several pots. GEEZ what's a mother to do *LOL*
I have one more question I hope someone can answer. How many pots can a 2 1/2 gallon bucket water? I can move them the pots close together. I have never watered this way so this is all new to me.
Thanks,
Sugar
Sugar,
Is there no one else that can help you out in your time of need? MAybe you can pay a kid to do the watering.
Glory I don't know any kids here close by..I sure hope the guy next door does it but I don't depend on him to do it....maybe God will help.
Someone told me one time that if you take a 3 liter soda bottle filled with water, and put a few pin holes in it ,set it on the soil before you leave, and it will just drip very slowly while you're gone....don't know if it works.......
now that is clever CC.
