Okay lotus experts! I checked my tuber today, after the dog stomped around on it..it is rooted well and still in place but the tip is broken off, is there any chance it will recover and send out new leaves or should I give up and look for a new one? (lotus-not dog, LOL)
Please give me good news!
Is it hopeless???
I would leave it and cross my fingers. How old is the tuber? I guess it would depend on how good the root system is settled.
Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, Carena. You might still have a growing tip in there that you don't know about. Give it some time but you might also want to look for another too. They are hard to find after the end of April unless you buy a more mature plant which is how I usually buy them. That way you have more than one growing tip.
Okay I will wait a few weeks to see if it is able to recover. It was just starting to send up it's first leaves. keeping my fingers crossed.... :o)
I will pray that you had more than one growing tip.
Speaking of water lotus....the heater on the pond with my lotus died during the winter and the water froze over. The fish and frogs died. It is April 30 and there are no shoots from the lotus yet. Is it dead or how long should I wait for growth to appear? Thanks for any answers you can give me.
I'd be patient. I am in zone 6 and mine are up about 8 inches. I hope they both make it. I know I am thrilled to have these for the first time. Thought I was going to strangle some kids a couple of weeks ago when they broke off my first shoots. Ack!!
Now both my fingers AND toes are crossed, maybe it will be okay! And the next time I doggie-sit, I'll be extra vigilant.
Hey, my tip got broken off in a hail storm yesterday. I'm thinking the poor thing is dead but who knows...
Lotusblossom.if the water froze down to the soil level in the pond over winter chances aren't good it will show up.They are very frost sensetive.Keep watching for new shoots..if none show up in the next three weeks its a goner.
My lotus freeze solid every three years or so. We call them lotuscicles. LOL They seem to come back fine most years. I do have extras of each so that if they do freeze out I will have a replacement though.
